Seriously "going to hell"

I think that many people that state they are "going to Hell" or "would much rather go to Hell than Heaven" truly don't believe in a literal Hell (myself included)

So, what I want to know is there anyone that truly believes in a literal Hell and expects that's where they will be going because they deliberately refuse to do what it takes to avoid it?

If not you, do you know anyone? Friend, relative, co-worker, acquaintence etc.?

I expect the numbers will be very low so I'm just testing my theory. This would be a great thread to attach a poll to but, I don't know how to do that yet. :D

I do not believe in a hell, but would much rather go there than heaven if they are real. Which I don't think I'd really have much of a choice in the matter.

My ideas about the afterlife are kind of a mish mash of Ancient Greek, Ancient Hebrew and Dharmic religions.
Simply put, I believe that everybody goes to a bleak, gloomy "underworld" (some would consider this Hell) regardless of their deeds in life. Some souls however might return to this world as a spirit (ghost, poltergeist, demon etc) or will be born into a new body.
So yeah I'm going to Hell, but with any luck (employ terrible Austrian accent now) I'll be back.

I would never wish hell on anyone. I do believe in a literal hell. The Bible speaks more of hell than it does of heaven.

Anyone who would say that they'd rather go to hell than heaven simply have no clue of what shame is.

No clue of what shame is? What has that to do with the subject?

It goes much deeper than that. For some, such as me, it's refusal to kneel before an entity that is seen as being unfit for praise and worship.

But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
Luke 12:5

Not the jolly sounding place ---- but a place to fear...

To be perfectly honest that sounds more like it's telling you to fear anybody with the power to damn the soul of another.

Why fear someone who is sending you to a jolly place? And I note that you used the words "damn the soul of another." So clearly to be damed is what hell is all about.
To be damned is a shame.

Hell is a place of eternal shame ----- see you really have no clue.
Scriptural reference please.

Speaking of having no clue, you have still not provided scriptural reference for Hell being a place of eternal shame.

Instead you reference a verse that tells us to "fear" God, because he can send you to Hell. Then misinterpret the verse into Hell being "a place of fear".

I know what you're getting at, all we're saying is that we can't think of any reference describing it as a place of shame. I could be wrong (I've not read the Bible for years after all) but as far as I remember it's a place of pain and torment and little more. Anybody with sufficient willpower can still be proud of themselves and of their brave choices (as Shadow wolf was hinting at) in a place of torment.

But why should we fear God?

I don't believe in the typical Christian Hell either, but your statement really does intrigue me. If you don't believe in a Hell, you must not have any concept of what it would be like, and yet you say you would prefer it to Heaven, which I'm also assuming you don't believe in. So, given the fact that you don't believe in these places, what is it about Hell that you think you might like more than Heaven?

Greetings

Although I do not believe in heaven or hell, I think it would be dishonest of me to say that i'd prefer to go to most literalists' view of hell than their view of heaven.

I wouldn't go anyway, but i'd RATHER go to heaven than hell. I'd get pretty pee'd off with God pretty damn quickly, and I would hate to serve him for eternity, but if the literalist view is right, it'll be a whole lot better than hell.

Basically summed up; Heaven = worshiping a God I do not think deserves any of it. Hell = taking a stand against said God.
