Service Jobs

What do you guys think? How many of you have service jobs and have experienced abuse?

I worked at a certain big box retail store with a red color scheme for about 4 years and I think it has affected me in 3 big ways.

1.) I try to be as nice as possible when I go to a restaurant or a store. You never know exactly what the worker had to deal with that day.

2.) It was a great motivator to finish my then Bachelors and my now Masters degree.

3.) Most people are nice until they realize their coupon is expired or that their credit card dosen't work.

I think the biggest negative thing that happened to me was that there was one of those animated Barbie movies that was put out on the floor about a couple of days too early. This was during the year I worked as a cashier, so I had no idea or control over what went out on the floor. She brought over the movie and no matter what I did, the system would not register the movie as being ready to be sold. Normally I could punch in a price, but that was not going to happen.

Long story short, she got huffy and demanded to see a manager over the fact that I was "wasting her time". I just gave her a blank stare and called a manager over. I was not going to let her ruin my day for me.

I worked in a deli for about 3 months once as a teenager. That was the only service job I had.

I actually don't think I had any instances of customer abuse towards me. I hated the job but the customers seemed cool enough.

It was a small sample size though, with only three months of work.

Nothing has made me want my own personal bazooka than having a service job. And not just because of abusive language, but from being physically assaulted a few times as well, though the abusive language makes me want a super-strong and reinforced squirt gun filled with concentrated hyrdrochloric acid (Xenomorph blood would better, but it's not real).
