Several questions for Evolution's applied logic

What answer would a professor of these fields give to these questions?

Question 6) why would sexual reproduction evolve at all?

I am sure that hundreds of college professors who accept evolution would be happy to answer your question, but of course you already know that and are looking for easier game in the forest at this forum.

Sexual reproduction is vital for protecting gene pools from diseases and parasites that could otherwise specialize in attacking that specific genotype. When there's variation in a genotype it's much more difficult for diseases and parasites to specialize in infecting those organisms because they have a wider variety of phenotypes; and the ability to shuffle genes through sex also increases the chances that some potential host organisms will be resistant or immune altogether.

Any farmer that uses cloned crops will tell you how bad it is when a disease or parasite infects their crops because all of them are the same: if the parasite can infect some of the crop it's a sure bet that the parasite can infect them all. Crops with shuffled genomes are far more resilient thanks to their larger gene pool and greater number of alleles.

Meow Mix,

I have to say that I am very much impressed with your knowledge of evolutionary biology. It easily outstrips mine (and to think I was a cell biology major in college many years ago!). I am glad that you're are well-read and seem thoroughly educated on the subject and that you're also part of the staff here. :)

Wow, thank you Matthew! I started out wanting to go into parasitology, so I took a pretty intense interest in ecology and parasite-host relationships -- since evolution is the cornerstone of modern biology, it's hard to start down that path without learning a lot on the subject.

Then I foolishly decided to get into cosmology instead. Oh well! :p

1) Is Evolution directional?:
a) no direction - every adaptation has equal probability to survive
b) yes -recessive every less adapted population will survive (less complex)
c) yes -progressive every more adapted population will survive

2) is evolution cooperative or competitive?

3) can a competitive system be self regulating (rely on others) if that is contrary to it's own survival?

4) is evolution compatible with a cooperative or competitive system
Or both?

5) is nature competitive or harmonious?

1) No
1 a) No
1 b) No
1 c) No

2) No

3) Please have another go at constructing this question.

4) False dichotomy.

5) Yes.

Well, that was pretty easy. Got any other questions?

How did the moon form? Or our solar system?

You might want to understand that in regards to life on earth.

Your journey sounds a tad bit like mine! I started out as a biology major. I was convinced that God was calling me into cell biology so he could have more YECs who were biologists. Then I got interested in chemistry and, later, physics. The funny thing is that by the time that I got into physics, I had gone from being a YEC to an OEC. Later, after I graduated from junior college, I switched from being an OEC to being a theistic evolutionist who combined intelligent design with common descent. I believed that God had individually designed individual genes and that the origin of species and higher taxonomic groups was all teleological. Interesting, huh?

I just decided on astrophysics because I liked space. :/

Yeah :) Methinks some people are just so struck in awe and wonder by the universe that it's hard for them to figure out which part they want to learn about most. That's been my problem. Sounds like we're kindred spirits there.

Have you read Parasite Rex by Carl Zimmer?
Parasites are one of my favorite subjects in evolution. It's a shame we don't get much good fossil evidence for them.

Well, that was silly wasn't it. :p

ps... I was always torn between being a paleontologist and an artist. I still am. Got degrees in biology and art.

1mutations are successful when they help genes/animals live and breed.

2 The coookcu bird..... yes it depends on whats deemed best. the coooku bird lays eggs in unwilling hosts nest. it was deemed that the energy used rearing eggs could be bettter spent hunting and mating again

4
Both gene survivla is more important then individual survival. altruistic genes could spread quite easily if it significant helped out others with the same genes.

5. Balance. Competitive balance i guess. one always pushing the other and being pushed as well.
