Sex Education: Let's Get Real

Sex education has progressed a bit in the last 50 years, but hardly enough. Today only 24 states and the District of Columbia mandate sex education. As for content,

only

18 states and the District of Columbia require that information on contraception be provided.
37 states require that information on abstinence be provided
12 states require discussion of sexual orientation.
13 states require the inclusion of information on the negative outcomes of teen sex and pregnancy.
20 states require information on condoms or contraception.

Pretty abysmal if you ask me. And glaringly missing is any mention of sexual practices. I believe that keeping potentially sexually active people ignorant of the ramifications of common sexual practices is not only appalling, but possibly harmful. And in light of the availability of online porn where children are exposed to sexual practices a lot of their parents aren't even aware of, this is now all the more critical. To that end I've gathered what I believe are those sexual practices most likely to appear in online porn, and ask which of them you feel should or should not be covered in age appropriate sex-ed classes. Your reasons are appreciated.

Anal sex

Anilingus

Bestiality

Bondage and discipline (B & D)

Cunnilingus

Exhibitionism

isint sex ed suppose to teach the basic principles not how to correctly fondle balls when giving a BJ? I mean I don't have an issue if we are teaching the cretins how to actually do things properly as sex is a major aspect of human society and being good at it is a good skill but really joking aside.

I think since the taboo around anal is non-existent it would be wise to teach how all the prep works as it's not as simple as shoving it in.

masturbation. is simple enough for most to discover on there own I don't really think we need to teach how to masturbate.

Exhibitionism. pretty sure sex in public is frowned upon. but guess you could lightly cover it.

bondage. lol teach them how to tie knots. this is a sailor knot. over here is a restricting knot.

Intercourse. no we are going to teach everything but normal sex. normal sex is for losers.

in all seriousness it's sad, we even need a class for such. if parents did their damn job in educating their kids like my did we would have no issue. if you cant even talk about sex with your kids you should not be having sex or having kids. just my philosophy

Anal sex
Should be covered, given how common it is and the widespread myth that one cannot thereby contract an STD.

Anilingus
The various uses of the tongue in sexual contact should be mentioned for health and safety reasons, but I see no reason to specifically bring up this one by name.

Bestiality
Should be included in any reasonable discussion of consent and what constitutes appropriate consent.

Bondage and discipline (B & D)
I see no reason why it would be necessary to highlight.

Cunnilingus
See anilingus above. Also, another health myth to debunk, as its another activity teens often imagine to be "safe".

Exhibitionism
Again, consent. Especially important to address in the age of sexting.

Fellatio
See anilingus above.

Fingering & Fisting
I'm not aware of any health effects from these practices, so I see no reason why they would come up.

Homosexuality
Yes, for obvious reasons. In any given classroom, it can be assumed that at least one student is gay, and that many others have questions about the whole thing. Information is better than misinformation.

Intercourse
I'm baffled as to how one could have even a sex-ed course, or even an English literature course, without somehow mentioning intercourse.

Masturbation
Obviously important to mention, given the role it plays in most teenagers' lives, and the staggering number of health myths that therefore surround it.

Mutual masturbation
I'm not sure this would ever be necessary to mention.

Prostitution
Very important to address. Naivete in this arena is part of how a lot of too-young sex workers get dragged in to the business in the first place.

S & M

None of the above. Personally I think that it's far more important to stress
1) Safe sex and contraceptive practices.
2) How to discern and avoid/report sexual predators, stalkers, abusers etc. both in real life and online. Who to seek help in case of trauma and emergencies.
3) Importance of consent for any and all sexual activity, knowing when an advance becomes forced and unwanted and managing associated negative emotions without causing harm to others.
4) Ins and out of sustaining relationships and emerge from heartbreak.
5) Avoiding negative body image (for women) and excessive machismo (for men).

Also, frankly parents need to be taught too about new developments of young generation culture to understand both their good features and risks so that they don't spontaneously judge something they don't understand as negative or be clueless about new threats.

When I took high school sex-ed a little over four years ago (I'm still really young, lol), I found that most of the education seemed to be about how to not get pregnant while having heterosexual sex, and focused on the diseases more than other forms of sex. In fact they seemed to discourage anal sex all together even though they never implicitly said so. In all honesty I wished we actually took the time to discuss more about some of the sex acts my classmates would ask about via slips of paper. And sexual orientation as well, since some of my classmates had to ask about homosexuality.

Mutual masturbation
I'm not sure this would ever be necessary to mention.

Sometimes people will ask about things that they have seen written and don't know about the act. Mutual masterbation was one of those things one of my classmates asked about in my high school sex-ed class. So in general I think it's important to mention some terms for the sake of knowing what others are talking about, "mutual masturbation" being one of those terms.

Honestly though, I think that's a technique most people are not going to struggle to figure out on their own! Maybe it's just my wicked homosexual urges talking, but there certainly was no manual involved when... well, anyhow! :chicken:

It should all be discussed in an objective manner, excluding superfluous stuff that would merely serve to waste time.
