Sexual Activities

well, its human nature to look out for yourself before others, to give into base passions and emotions, and to give into most desires. The Jedi looks out for others before themselves, strives to not give into passion and emotion (the jedi code stanza 1: there is no emotion. there is peace. jedi code stanza 3: there is no passion. there is serenity.), and does not give into desires if it hinders the common good. in those ways we supress our own nature. there are probabally more, but those are the ones i can think of.

Whether you believe you were created by god or you believe you developed by virtue of nature, to supress your nature is an act of violence against yourself. It is a cruelty.

Is that your own quote, or is it someone elses ?- just asking, because I rather like it.

That's mine. :) Feel free to steal it.

Is it ? Do you therefore think that being the opposite requires a conscious effort?:)

Without going into specifics; why is it that sexual activities have become such a significant feature of “morality”? It astounds me, and alarms me, how interested people are in the sexual activities of others. It also interests me; why are people so concerned?
Considering that religion was created by man to help a community express and organize itself, it makes a lot of sense why sex could have come to be so important over other natural activites such as kissing or eating. First, it must be clarified that the ancient peoples who first practiced religion were not concerned so much with sex as they were with reproduction.

Even though we have today unlocked the secrets of reproduction, it is still considered to be an amazing process with beautiful and spectacular results. Such thinking was no different for ancient people, who even with limited scientific knowledge were able to connect that babies came from sex. Thus, sex was considered to be extremely important and necessary because babies are the future of any species, and so obviously sex, (the causer of babies), would be respected.

Another trait of sex, (besides the obvious reproduction part), which developed later on and contributed to the absurdly elevated view of sex was, (and is), purity. Somewhere along the line, ancient peoples in patriarchal societies began to link sex with purity, and didn't even have to use religion to justify it, (although later on they did anyway). The fault for inventing the "purity aspect" lies on the heads of the same group of people who have caused most of the worlds ills: "Macho-men".

Ah yes, those men with egos the size of Texas, rivaling the egos of the men who actually live in Texas, understandably did not want "damaged or spoiled goods". They didn't want a woman who had already "been had" by another man, and so, virginal purity was born. Women who had sex before marriage or children out of wedlock could be assured then that they would never have a chance of being married because no man wanted them. Because they weren't married, they had no man to care and provide for them. Because they didn't have a provider, they had little or no money, and were forced to support themselves and any possible children off of their meager salaries as temple prostitutes. Because they were poor, they made up the lowest class of society, and were basically outcasts. Thus, having sex outside of marriage became a big no-no.

As far as homosexuals are concerned, their time as social exiles is the product of the same travesty. Even today, many "straight" men are weirded out and somewhat threatened by gay men.

Today, it is more or less the same as far as how people think. You will notice that sex between two married people never makes headlines. Sex is only important when people are "breaking the rules". However, the necessity for those rules has become non-existent. First of all, we have bith control, which means that women can have sex outside of marriage without getting pregnant. Secondly, the idea of purity, although still alive and well in religious communities is much more lax--many don't care, and the rest are willing to forgive. Thus, impure women can still get married, (yay)! Which brings me to my third point: Women don't even need to get married if they don't want, because in our society women are able to get good jobs and support themselves satisfactorily without a "provider".

As for homosexuals, the "impure" factor is still running strong, but is backed only by ancient religious rules and blatant prejudice. Therefore I feel it is only a matter of time before that mess blows over.

Lastly, I would like to look at ancient Celtic communities. They were mostly matriarchal. In those colonies, it was rare for women to be married, and many women had several children by several different men. Sex was still considered to be important because of reproduction, but it was much more embraced. There was no concept of "sexual purity". The high Goddess in Celtic mythology was the Goddess of fertility, and fruitful women were revered above all others.

If it wasn't for those darned "macho-men" that might have been how the rest of the world developed, and what a happy place this world might be today.

Why do you feel greed hate and anger are all negative things?

Greed invokes motivation with furthers humanity...

Hate and anger are perfectly natural.

Fear, well, fear protects me from scary beasts out in the wild :bounce

greed is what creates many problems in society. greed for oil, greed for power. Bush wants oil, he starts a war. Hitler wanted power over europe, he killed many people in the process, and still failed in hsi quest. fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering. Anger and hate may be natural, but just because it is natural doesn't mean it is good for you (like tobacco, its natural, but it still causes cancer).

What you are talking about is greed in excess. Consider greed in moderation.

The same goes for hate. Hate, being the opposite of Love, helps mankind appreciate what it truly Loves. I am not going to start condoning hate crimes, but I think it is important to appreciate the significance of all our emotions.

They are what make us human.

A world without anger would be a boring one indeed. :jiggy:

How did Yoda say it?..."fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate..leads to suffering..." :D

Sex is sex. It's no one else's buisness but you and your partner(s). Do whatever you want, if "god" didn't want us to keep having sex he wouldn't have made it so much fun:p

i still dont think greed is good at all. Hate is a necessary thing, of course, we cannot have love without hate, but that doesn't mean i should give into it. I, as a Jedi, cannot give into my emotions, they cloud judgement and lead to the dark side if not controlled. A jedi can feel hate, but doesn't give into it. Anger can be very useful yes, but it is not something to be surrendered to. it is a double-edged sword. There is righteous anger, and there is unrighteous anger. righteous anger would be like anger against an oppresive dictator, for the abuse of the people. that is good, because it leads you to do something good about it. anger that leads to bad things, like murder, is unrighteous, and is of the darkside.

maybe it is, but you would be better off as a shadow jedi. You dont have very many morals, but you're not evil, like the sith. Satanists, as i have experienced on this site, advocate giving into your own nature and instincts. Sith do that, but they will do anything to achieve what they want. shadow jedi follow instincts and their own nature, but wont commit mass murder and bad deeds. Oh, and us jedi, we get double-bladed sabers too, look at bastila. We also get purple sabers, so ha!
