Without going into specifics; why is it that sexual activities have become such a significant feature of morality? It astounds me, and alarms me, how interested people are in the sexual activities of others. It also interests me; why are people so concerned?
Considering that religion was created by man to help a community express and organize itself, it makes a lot of sense why sex could have come to be so important over other natural activites such as kissing or eating. First, it must be clarified that the ancient peoples who first practiced religion were not concerned so much with
sex as they were with
reproduction.
Even though we have today unlocked the secrets of reproduction, it is still considered to be an amazing process with beautiful and spectacular results. Such thinking was no different for ancient people, who even with limited scientific knowledge were able to connect that babies came from sex. Thus, sex was considered to be extremely important and necessary because babies are the future of any species, and so obviously sex, (the causer of babies), would be respected.
Another trait of sex, (besides the obvious reproduction part), which developed later on and contributed to the absurdly elevated view of sex was, (and is), purity. Somewhere along the line, ancient peoples in patriarchal societies began to link sex with purity, and didn't even have to use religion to justify it, (although later on they did anyway). The fault for inventing the "purity aspect" lies on the heads of the same group of people who have caused most of the worlds ills: "Macho-men".
Ah yes, those men with egos the size of Texas, rivaling the egos of the men who actually live in Texas, understandably did not want "damaged or spoiled goods". They didn't want a woman who had already "been had" by another man, and so, virginal purity was born. Women who had sex before marriage or children out of wedlock could be assured then that they would
never have a chance of being married because no man wanted them. Because they weren't married, they had no man to care and provide for them. Because they didn't have a provider, they had little or no money, and were forced to support themselves and any possible children off of their meager salaries as temple prostitutes. Because they were poor, they made up the lowest class of society, and were basically outcasts. Thus, having sex outside of marriage became a big no-no.
As far as homosexuals are concerned, their time as social exiles is the product of the same travesty. Even today, many "straight" men are weirded out and somewhat threatened by gay men.
Today, it is more or less the same as far as how people think. You will notice that sex between two married people never makes headlines. Sex is only important when people are "breaking the rules". However, the necessity for those rules has become non-existent. First of all, we have bith control, which means that women can have sex outside of marriage without getting pregnant. Secondly, the idea of purity, although still alive and well in religious communities is much more lax--many don't care, and the rest are willing to forgive. Thus, impure women can still get married, (yay)! Which brings me to my third point: Women don't even need to get married if they don't want, because in our society women are able to get good jobs and support themselves satisfactorily without a "provider".
As for homosexuals, the "impure" factor is still running strong, but is backed only by ancient religious rules and blatant prejudice. Therefore I feel it is only a matter of time before that mess blows over.
Lastly, I would like to look at ancient Celtic communities. They were mostly matriarchal. In those colonies, it was rare for women to be married, and many women had several children by several different men. Sex was still considered to be important because of reproduction, but it was much more embraced. There was no concept of "sexual purity". The high Goddess in Celtic mythology was the Goddess of fertility, and fruitful women were revered above all others.
If it wasn't for those darned "macho-men" that might have been how the rest of the world developed, and what a happy place this world might be today.
