There are many false ideas about it. Shaktism is a very great sect of Hinduism that produced many great saints.

No full lifetime of constant reading will allow you to know more. There is too much to know. Shaktism is quite similar to Saivism. Have you tried any of those internet faith determiners yet.. ? those ones where you answer questions, and then it tells you what you are.

I think for the most part these tests are stupid, but as they say "curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back".

I have always had deist and Advaitin leanings. I think the problem I have is that the idea of personal gods and goddesses, or incarnations smacks of Christianity.

This doesn't sit well with a lot of people, but there really are some parallels between the lives and words of Krishna and Jesus. Now, in my view, what has to do with Jesus was most likely taken from Krishna and the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, which preceded Jesus by centuries.

Shaktism goes all the way back in Hindu History. In the Vedas it says.

Aditi is heaven, Aditi is mid-space, Aditi mother, Father,Son. Aditi is all Gods, and five classes of humans, Aditi all that has been born and shall be.-Rig Veda 1.89.10

Aditi is mother of the gods and of every existing form, she is the synthesis of all things. She even gave birth to Vishnu.

Some of the Hymns of the Vedas were given by women sages. Tantric Shaktism has been open to women and all castes.

I agree there are many false ideas around about the Shakti cult in hinduism. for many who worship Shiva or Vishnu, they honour their gods feminine partner. All schools of thought have a tantric path that can be followed, there has been many wrongs carried out in the goddess names, but many wrongs have been carried out in other sects. Many have argued against the shakti cult for it's use of blood sacrifice in worship and some of the more exotic acts that are carried out in worship, be careful to judge others in case you are judged yourself

I just read a great story about the Vedic Sage Agastya who believed his realization was incomplete so he wanted to be initiated in to knowledge of the Sri Vidya (the name of a Hindu religious system devoted to the goddess Lalita. The Lalita sahasranama is a hymn that comes from Brahmanda Purana. It is a dialogue between Hayagriva, an avatar of Mahavishnu and Agastya about Sri Vidya.) So he went far away to find a master of that tradition. After many weeks of walking he found this master. After meeting this master he asked him if could be initiated. He was told NO! Because Agastya was to advanced in his spiritual life.
But the master said His Guru the founder of his lineage is advanced enough to give him initiation. Great said Agastya, were can I find this Guru. The master said the name of the province. Agastya was shocked because that was his province. Then he was told the village again Agastya said thats my Village. Then He was told what the house of the Guru looked like and Agastya said OH MY, THATS MY HOUSE ! Then he was told the name of the Great Guru her self Lopamudra. Agastya said THATS MY WIFE !

Story retold from the book Daughters of the Goddess.

Lopamudra was a Vedic seer. Together with her Brahmarshi husband she spread the fame of the Lalita Sahasranama. A hymn in the Rigveda is also attributed to her.
