I think it is wrong as a matter of safety, you should protect your kids from sun damage, the ozone layer ain't what it used to be.

But little boys dont wear tops..And besides that how much protection do you really get with a bikini top anyway? Padded or not.

And what about hot humid nights when the sun is down?

My mum is a sunblock fanatic, she would have made us bathe in it if she could. Still, you make a good point.

I meant tee-shirts or long sleeved swimming suits, a lot more parents are opting for these, than the padded no swim, swimwear.

But its not a matter of safety in reality. Its because its a little girl.

When I was that age in the 70's..Worries about sun damage were limited to trying not to get overly burned. There were no ozone alerts..And I was expected to keep my shirt on and my brother was not.

And if its is a matter of safety..Then boys should have a top on at all times too..including for swimming.

I understand what you are saying and you are right, there is a double standard, but all kids should be covered up in the sun, so it should be a moot point.

In the grand scheme of things that isnt going to help all that much though. That little girl will still need sunscreen on every exposed part of her body..

What she is wearing will only save the parents a little sunscreen..

My husband wears a shirt..he drives a lot..His left arm..the one that is next to the drivers side window is tan..thats just from driving..

I have a friend that got skin cancer..The mole that developed was right above her knee..

I had a neighbor that got it too..It started above one of his ears..

Yes and it should be every sun exposure..A very small portion Im sure for most of society is a visit to the beach or swimming ..Its every time you walk out side day in and day out any area of your body that is exposed is where we get most of our exposure.

It actually saves a lot of time, as well as sunscreen, I have experience bringing 4 under 5's to the beach and it is much easier with these suits and hats (they have built in sun protection) even with the suits though there is a double standard , it is easier to get the full leg boys suits than the girls, which are usually either above or below the knee.

You know this kid would wear one if he was allowed

Most people cover up and use sunblock when taking their kids out in sunny weather, I know a parent who puts sunblock on her kids in winter , in Ireland.

I understand Monta and I agree if you are trying to avoid getting badly burned at a beach or in the pool from long tme of exposure in obviously hot climates..that the less area you have ot cover in sunscreem the easier ...

What Im saying is for most of us that is not where we get 99% of our sun exposure..You do NOT have to get burned to be at risk for skin cancer..and it doesnt have to be in a hot climte.

Its a matter of how often you are exposed to the sun period and any part of your body being exposed..

I mean add up how many hours over a life time sun exposure is at a beach or in a pool in a bathing suit versus how many hours in a life time sun exposure is from every other time we are outside for any reason ...

I mean would that little girl wear long sleeve shirt and long pants in 90 degree weather to go play in the park for an hour? Say twice a week for 52 weeks a year ?Your talking righ there 104 hours a year shes in the sun just with that one example....

I guess you would be surprised how many kids are not covered up in long sleeves and slathered in sunscreen every mornign before they head off to school on their bikes and are exposed every single day at recess ..that also dont pack sunscreen with them to reaply for that and the bike ride home.

But only for times that they are going to be outside for extended periods of time.

It doesn't have to be a tweed suit, kids need to cover up, if the sun is so strong that they can't be in it comfortably in a tee-shirt and light cotton pants, they shouldn't really be out in it. The benefits don't outweigh the risks, it is a pain in the but, for parent and kids, but it is just something you have to get on with. It isn't just the risk of cancer, which in itself is reason enough, skin damage is inevitable.

Interestingly in Australia where they have a very outdoors lifestyle, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70  These are tips for avoiding cancer issued by their campaign.

<H2>Avoid
Avoid being outside when UV levels are highest, between 10am - 3pm, as much as you can.
Protect

Wear a hat, sun protective clothing and sunglasses when you're outdoors.
Wear SPF 30+ sunscreen, even in the colder months. Re-apply every two hours.
Look for shade. But remember, UV radiation can scatter and reflect off surfaces like water, sand, snow and concrete - so wear protective clothing and sunscreen, even when you're in the shade

Monta we arent disagreeing here.I was only trying to point out most of our risk is from long term exposure over years not a trip to the beach once a year on vactaion.

Driving in the car 30 minutes a day with a skirt on and one part of your leg is getting hit by the sun the entire time..Your hands on the steering wheel...

I guess Im not articulating well enough what Im trying to say..

Im saying its great not to get burned on the beach..I have had horrible sunburn myself and its agonizing.

And I was also the one smearing my sons down with so much sunscreen on to go swimming that they were litterally white with the lotion..They have never gotten badly 'burned" under my watch..

But they are "tan" on parts of their body that get smaller doses of sun from activties (daily) where there no threat of getting burned and the intention isnt to have 'fun in the sun".

Again I understand what you are saying. But how many parents serioulsy..are for instance putting suncreem on their childrens feet for example when they wear flip flops six months out of the year?

My husbands feet have a "tan line' where the strap on his flip flops cover that part of his foot.

And he does not work out doors..He just wear flip flops about six month out of the year. His neck line is also marked in the shape of a V of his shirt.

I dont know about the strenght of the sun..I do know that there are certain "peak" times of the day when its worse..And certain times of the year.

And yes there are days here and Im sure in many other areas..where we are recommended to stay indoors if at all possibe..if not avoid these hours if possible..and if not advised to wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen and avoid long time exposure.

We are also advised the same thing on some days but just from the heat .And advice for such things as avoid alcohol while in the sun..and drink plenty of water...etc...

As a mom of a daughter, my inclination is to think the idea of a padded top is crazy. However, I really need to see the actual top before commenting. Any pics?
