Which would be better, a public testimony before the House oversight committee, or in private behind closed doors so the public does not get to know what was said?

Why is this under US politics? He hold any offices? He run for any? Anyone even vote for him?
It would be unwise to testify behind closed doors, because then the Republicans (who do have an agenda in all this) can frame his testimony to suit themselves. Better that we see and hear his own words for ourselves.

Sorry if I was not clear. This is about him giving testimony in Congress in regards to the attempt to impeach Joe Biden. That makes it political.
