Should Muslim veils be banned in public universities?

I think freedom of Muslim dress should be allowed in public universities. Who's right is it infringing? I thought France to be this bastion of liberal tolerance.

To be fair, we are constantly hearing about the need to respect cultural differences. Here is an example of a secular culture that has made a decision that runs counter to decisions made by other, non-secular cultures.

I think it is fair to criticize the decision as illiberal, but then how can those who would reject the ability of outsiders to critique traditionalist cultures from a liberal perspective reasonably claim an ability to judge France's decision?

The irony here is pretty shocking - if my daughter went to Saudi Arabia, she would not be able to drink, drive, own property or wear a bikini at the beach. She would be obliged to cover her body, she would not be free to practice her faith and would face arrest and flogging if she were raped.

But apparently when a Moslem girl comes to the West and decides to follow a practice that Westerners find offensive, that presents a security risk to all of us and that is demeaning to men in general - we are obliged to welcome it.

My daughter would not walk down the street in Egypt dressed in a miniskirt and boob tube, because she knows that the locals find such things offensive. She does not in fact have the right to behave inappropriately when in a foreign culture. Why would Moslems in France have that right?
