No, there is zero chance of them winning if they make such a change at this point. Their best choices, were they to try it, are probably Amy Klobuchar or Gavin Newsome, and I don't think either could gather enough momentum in the time left.

Could be their best chance of winning. Get someone new in and ride the newness wave, there’s not enough time for whoever it is to become unpopular, unless they already are.
I think that given the general dislike of both candidates, and both parties, a new younger, more articulate, more positive candidate with real ideas and proposals could actually sweep the election. But is there enough time for that message to get out?

Given the fact that we all have the attention span of a gnat, and the media would be all over this new candidate, I suspect there would be enough time to gain the enthusiasm necessary.

But the party will not do it. They're too afraid of rocking the boat and risking their ride on the taxpayer gravy train.

It may be too late for that. They never should have picked Biden to begin with. They never should have picked Hillary in 2016.
They never should have picked Trump, a convicted felon, a sexual predator, a liar and a cheat, and a wanna be fascist who will take away basic human right if he ever gets the chance.

Exactly this. They've become conservatives in response to the extremism of the republican right. And as a result, they have also become very ineffective because they are too afraid to take any real effective action.

If someone of such low moral character can gain the upper hand over their opponents, then what does that tell us about their opponents?

It might tell us that the voters are disgruntled or discontented to some degree.
We have spent so much time contemplating the possible cognitive deficiencies of the candidates. Can we not also acknowledge the extreme and obvious cognitive deficiencies of the American voters?

If someone is considering committing suicide because they are "disgruntled", we get them help. Does that not also apply to a nation?

Gretchen Witmer would have a chance, Biden has already lost his chance, but I suspect the democrats will stick with their sinking ship, so get ready for fascist dictatorship and start to be careful about what you post online

Acknowledging the cognitive deficiencies of the American voters has been one of this nation's favorite pastimes. In fact, it's because of those perceived deficiencies that we have limitations on democracy, such as exemplified by the Electoral College. So, yeah, let's acknowledge those extreme and obvious cognitive deficiencies.

Fake news and misinformation also seem to be commonly cited as factors in influencing public opinion in a certain direction.

If someone is considering committing suicide because they are "disgruntled", we get them help. Does that not also apply to a nation?

It depends on what you mean by "help."

If I knew how to help I would.

It seems to me that if someone is disgruntled to the point of suicide and needs help, a good way to help them would be to examine their history and try to pinpoint key events which might have led them to that point.

That's the question that seems foremost on people's minds: How did it come to this? It's a question that can be answered, if people were willing to take an honest and sincere look at the attitudes, policies, and events which led us up to this point. There are reasons.

That is a good answer. But I would think before you get into that level of introspection, take the gun out of their hand.

Capitalism is how it came to this. But the greed and stupidity that capitalism promotes, enables and rewards is just too powerful for us to collectively acknowledge and face down. We see our neighbor lying, cheating and stealing and getting rich from it, so we think we must do the same just to keep ourselves from being trampled. And we're not wrong about that. So slowly and inevitably we all become poisoned by the greed and stupidity of capitalism. And because we don't want to see ourselves for what we have become, we deny the cause, and we deny our own complicity. And it all just keeps getting worse.
