Should The State Actively Let You Suicide?

Existential depression is not regular depression, It cannot be cured with drugs. A lot of people with it go on to suicide. Realising that life is meaningless, morality is made up, one is basically always alone with one's thoughts and free essentially in a purposeless world drives some people to insanity. I know, I've been there and it still affects me now and will forever.

So? You asked what the state's response should be. The state shouldn't care if you consider life meaningless (it really isn't once you have kids), the state should only care if you contribute. That you see no point to tomorrow is your problem, not the state's. The state can't help you to opt out and still be a coherent entity.

I wish I could lend you some of my immunity to meaning in life.

It is a cruel belief. We all need each other to help and to prosper. Individualism taken to stupid measures is undoable. It is a decidedly American capitalistic belief that we can all do well on our own. Other people do owe us. They owe us a nice environment, hospitals, libraries, schools and homes. If I see a person dying in the street, it's my duty to help him. It's human compassion.

How's that working out for you?

I have been thinking about your post and you may have something there. Society, in my mind, requires me to live in a nice house with a nice lawn. That lawn is now in need of a good mowing. I think I may just embrace your way of thinking and demand society come over and cut my grass; and they should wash my vehicles while they are here.

Very well. When society works as a collective whole, rather than cut-throat, it works. I find it sad that many Americans cannot see past their own way of life.

Never has. I have found that those who believe they are "owed" seem to operate under the theory that it's okay to wrestle it away from those that have "earned".

I believe everybody is owed healthcare, education, a house and a bed. If I'm 20% poorer because some of my income went to a healthcare tax, I wouldn't care. I'd feel far happier that children with cancer can recieve treatment, or a poor kid can go to school or university.

I mean rather than having to run in front of a truck or jump from a bridge, should the State provide a person who wishes to kill himself a safe and painless method of doing so? Assume this would apply to those 18+.
Interestingly enough, my first thought when reading the OP is: Who is going to pay for it?

How much does it take to let someone die, I would say, stuff all.
ah, so you are thinking just remove the law that says suicide is illegal and let it sort itself out?

I was under the impression from the OP that there would be a system set up to allow suicides....

You read me wrong, I meant its doesn't coast much to let someone die, it actually coast more to continuing to let them live in agony.
