"Simulation Theory" is rubbish

I’ve made a few posts on these forums about Simulation Theory

Sim Theory is the notion that this dimension of reality and all us who dwell within it are the products of an elaborate computer simulation maintained by a species of mysterious super-advanced beings.

I used to truly believe in it

I have now realised what a load of crap it is

Seriously… It’s for people who cannot tell the difference between machines and organisms!

When you expand Sim Theory and take it to its logical conclusions I’ve found that it soon turns into a pseudo-religion, with a fake God who is subordinate to the mysterious "over-seers" who created The Simulation and who go largely unexplained

I believe Simulation Theory obstructed my relationship with God and stunted my spiritual development

It’s really bleak too, so I’m glad it’s a load of rubbish

The Wachowskis have a lot to answer for

So is the God theory, but that's not going to stop folks from speculating. With zero evidence one can come up with any theory/conjecture they want.

I think you caught the "flaw", I guess. It just an alternate God theory. I doubt anyone alive today will be finding any answers to the question of how we are here, so might as well speculate. Just best not to take any of that speculating seriously.

I think that above is the key point (and I agree).

We can create computer simulation games with characters all we want but do any of these characters subjectively experience anything like we do?

It takes an observer (us) to find any subjective meaning to all these unfeeling electrons and pixels moving around. We have that mysterious thing called consciousness that doesn't exist in a computer generated character.

God is a mainstream idea.

Mainstream rubbish doesn't make it any less rubbish. However sure, one person's rubbish is another person's absolute truth.

Anyway the thread is about simulation, I suppose the difference being computers need be involved. God, if there is one, is basically running a simulation. Just God with God's superpower doesn't need a computer. So take out this idea of needing computers and it's basically the same scenario. I think the need for computers is kind of a strawman, at least in the sense of our concept of computers.

The Matrix, fiction. At least the story itself, hopefully most understand it was created in someone's mind. However some folks take this religious stuff seriously even though it also was the product of mental creativity.

No, they don't. It's not really their fault if someone thinks that their fantasy world is true.

I know, I know, I was being flippant and expected someone to say that

But those films do feed a lot of paranoia

I could say the same thing about science, but I don't.

You have not exhaustively covered the different Gods that people believe in.

When you try to live a certain way to test out the belief system, or when you get around to hard evidence, it is not easy to see Matrix from reality. Many very smart people are confused or struck, and simple hand-waiving doesn't bring them out of their religion.

Anything not verified is rubbish, even if it is called science. Really, more of a chance of being wrong than right.

I have, unless someone has something we can all verify.

No but if they actually start looking at their belief, testing it, they may come to that conclusion all by their lonesome. I think it's good this simulation is being called rubbished, I just think the idea needs to be expanded on. Not just look at other folks beliefs but also take a gander at our own.

Humans are very creative. Nothing wrong with that. I just feel we ought to separate what we can prove from what we can't, if we care about accuracy.

A belief doesn't have to be accurate or true to be useful to a person. A person can even be completely aware it's all fantasy. Just has to work well enough to get a person through the day.

Well, I know that with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe that if you want to know if the scriptures speak of God or are just of man, doing the will of the Father (God) is what you do first and then you get the evidence. We believe you don't reason your way to it first; you have to obey.

I'm thankful to God that your eyes are opening. In my opinion, simulation "theory" shouldn't even be called a theory, since there is no scientific evidence to support it. If anything, it's a hypothesis.

Sure, put enough belief into whatever belief you fancy and a person will usually get results of some kind to support their continued belief. I find the unconscious mind is usually quite content to support what we place our faith in. Still no necessary requirement for accuracy of the belief.

Person experiences deja vu, proof positive of the Matrix.

While it would be sad if someone brainwashed themselves into a religion, we still haven't established that there is no God.

It all depends on the hypothesis:

The idea that the periodic table is a mathematical matrix, and physics is all maths...

Then if we quantify that a snail shell is a Fibonacci spiral, and a wave in the ocean or a galaxy spiral is all Fibonacci maths.

This implies there is over an 85% probability there is a CPU coordinating our reality, for the maths to all be standardized.

In my opinion.

Lots of other movies copy the Matrix after that (although the Matrix borrows a tiny bit from Tron though not much) and maybe a little from Star Trek and its hollow decks. Here are some of the big ones that follow its success: 13th Floor, The Adjustment Bureau and Inception. They all pose the question how do we know that we are awake. Tron is a little different, because its 3rd person: How do programs know that they are in the computer.

Watchowski have awesome special effects though. Their staff invent some very cool special effects, like that 360 degree freeze frame where you get to pan around someone who is in the air making a perfect kick.

I saw the film, probably the only person on Earth, without knowing what it was going to be. I never saw the preview until afterward. I only went because it was an action film that was rated R, and at that time in my life I kind of felt like I was going through an awakening though not quite like Neo's context change. I wanted to see an R movie which at the time I thought was a no no, so it was like I had taken a red pill before seeing it. It was a good time to watch this film. It was the perfect film for the perfect viewer.

The experience of it is very cool, because you've got this guy who is relentlessly pursuing truth only to find that his context has changed. Suddenly the questions he's been asking are tiny compared to his new ones. Now he's supposed to save the world that he was trying to escape from, and its unfair and confusing. Plus he's covered in goo and is weak as a noodle.

It's modern theism in secular drag that too is about how we live in a reality created by reality that they call god. Both share a disconnect from direct experience. So at some level by their own words they are clueless about reality itself. It's normal. Be careful of modern theism it's not christian, it's not biblical it's not reality it's a reality TV show and fairly nonsensical.

Can you tell the difference? Is there necessarily and inherently a difference? Are they mutually exclusive?

I'd say they are mutually exclusive: one occurs naturally whereas the other is manufactured and one is organic in nature and the other mechanical - and more importantly, one is alive and the other is not

The biggest issue with the simulation theory is that it doesn't really answer anything. Imagine if it were true, then what? still doesn't come any closer to who controls or made the simulation. It simply adds another obstacle.

Unfortunately its the same regardless of what belief you take, God, atheistic etc. None of them answers why we are here in the first place. Unless you already believe in God for whatever other reason you might have, you wont win anything adding him to the equation, besides having to figure out what everyone else believe or guess God wants without having a clue. If I were you and you are interesting in the why we are here question, keep an open mind instead and try to come up with your own idea instead. At least that way you decided for yourself :)
