Now, is the caldera in Yellowstone level of threat exaggerated? Because the only time I've ever seen anything discussed about it is on the History channel's special on supervolcanos.

Who knows if they really are right. I think I've only seen them talk about it on these specials. These people are supposed to be foremost in their fields but they do become something of media celebrities. But I think they've been caught so many times with their pants down, scientists are erring on the side of caution. But to what end w/ Yellowstone? Where on the earth won't be affected?

Interesting connections I see in that article you provided Jainarayan. Lots of talk of fire :D

As for the Earth and being affected by the eruption of a super volcano, well I think it would pretty much affect the entire Earth. It would almost have to throw the world into another ice age. There are some theories that the first major ice age was brought on by an eruption of a super volcano or two. Which if you ask me is fine, its the Earths natural way of cooling itself and preventing global warming (which is real and not entirely caused by us) from getting out of hand.

Its just that I think most of us would die in the process!

Yeah, I had forgotten that fire is symbolic in the image of Nataraja.

Exactly. That's why I think that no amount of planning will save us from a cataclysm like that. Both the Toba and Tambora eruptions caused global cooling. The Toba eruption ~70,000 years ago is hypothesized to have caused a human genetic bottleneck.

What exactly do you mean a bottleneck in human genetics? Like a stunt to our evolutionary growth?

I think there may be some ways to scientifically stave off a complete extinction, but I'm not sure what plans are out there. People are more concerned with wealth and political agenda rather than self preservation.

A serious drop in the breeding population, putting the species at risk for extinction. At the time of the Toba eruption it's estimated there were only about 15,000 human individuals. This mostly because of the volcanic winter. Life must have been damn near impossible.

Indeed. Although I think that its almost necessary to "refresh: the page if you will. I mean if you look at today the world almost seems over populated, festering with disease and riddled with genetic error and self mutilation.

As harsh as it sounds, I do believe we will witness an event proportional to a catastrophic level in our life time.

No doubt. It's happened before many times to many species.

It would too hard to say what will take place in this lifetime. Some of these natural phenomenon take tens of thousands of years to cycle, or happen, or take place very, very, rarely.

Yeah, like the pole reversals that are going to happen overnight. They take milennia, and are slow gradual processes. I think because our lifespans are so short, we can't really conceive the scope of geologic time, so we think everything bad is going to happen in our lifetimes.

It's because LHC has created a stable quantum black hole that's devouring Earth from within as it wobbles back and forth like a yo yo through the planet!

And the gravitational effects of Planet X on the Earth will only compound the destruction.

Don't forget about solar flares guys. They will make all volcanos and bombs go boom!
