nowhere to go.....nothing to do....

the only job they ever knew was no longer theirs

and dealing with whites as PEOPLE......
having to learn to free enterprise!!!!!!!
with little or no education!!!!!

apparently some slaves didn't much care to be set free

In order to consider that point valid, you need to consider it acceptable for humans to be "property" in the first place.

It had been acceptable from biblical times. And apparently, in the U,S., the concept of human property was still acceptable at least to the time of Lincoln when he cited the War Powers Act of the Constitution for his legal freeing of the slaves held by Confederate states only.

Do you consider it to be acceptable?

Not true, there was a long period during which slavery was expressly outlawed by the Roman Empire and many of its successor states, before rearing its ugly head again in the 15th century.

Perhaps not so odd. One of the greatest (and most successful) slave revolts in history finished in an enigma. Spartacus lead Celtic and Germanic slaves against their Roman masters. They had to fight hard to reach the Alps and their freedom beyond Roman territory. They succeeded, then, inexplicably, turned around and went back.

When faced with the harsh reality of it, they couldn't return to the world they (or their parents /grandparents) had been taken from. Rome was all they knew and they were finally slaughtered trying to realise their dream of a free-state in Sicily.
