Snopes.com: Musk Was Once an Undocumented Immigrant in US?

The claim is judged unproven. But thinking about Trump wanting to expel legal immigrants, I could not help but think about expelling Musk if it could be proven that he did violate the law (no exceptions).

Snopes.com: Musk Was Once an Undocumented Immigrant in US?

This claim seemed to stem primarily from the 2013 interview during the Milken Institute Global Conference, in which Elon Musk and his brother spoke about their early days as budding entrepreneurs in the U.S. In that interview, Kimbal Musk recalled various venture capitalists they met in 1996 (before Elon graduated from the University of Pennsylvania), saying that "when they [venture capitalists] did fund us, they realized that we were illegal immigrants." Elon Musk laughed and corrected him, saying it was more of a "gray area."

As your own linked source states,

An updated review and newer sources further confirm that while Musk's immigration status may have been complicated at certain points, there is no credible evidence to label him as having been an "illegal immigrant," in his brother's words.

In sum, the claim that Elon Musk was once an "illegal immigrant" in the U.S. is unproven.
And
There is no credible evidence that he was ever fully "illegal" during his more than three decades in the U.S.
Stop spreading lies.

I slap myself every time I use AI (because a AI query uses about 10x the energy of a traditional internet search. We are killing our planet).

Anyway, into my 4th glass of wine (!), I decided to enter into a (ridiculous) , brief chat with Chat GPT.

Is Elon Musk an illegal immigrant to the United States? Yes or no? And in either case, in your opinion, what is his legitimate status in the United States of America?

Response (God help us);

No, Elon Musk is not an illegal immigrant to the United States. Musk is originally from South Africa and moved to the U.S. legally through a series of visas. He first entered the U.S. on a student visa to attend the University of Pennsylvania. After completing his studies, he worked under an H-1B visa, which is a legal work visa for highly skilled individuals. Eventually, Musk obtained a green card, and later he became a U.S. citizen in 2002.

His current status is that of a naturalized U.S. citizen.

I didn't ignore it. You're stating that it was unproven is overcome by your repeating it despite that fact.
What is the lie?
That you dislike it being repeatedly brought does not make it a lie.

Especially when the thread starts out with: "The claim is judged unproven."

Is it that the first line was not big enough or something?

The "fact" of the matter is that it is unknown.

Not that it really matters.

I mean, Trump plans on sending the legal immigrants in Springfield, Ohio out of the country....

It Aint Necessarily So

How about that wife of Trump's? Can she prove that her papers aren't fraudulent? Even so, according to Trump, even legal immigrants are illegals. Would he put her in a cage separate from Barron in a separate cage? [/SARCASM]

Read the article, particularly the "timeline" section. The evidence for the claim is Musk's own statements. The timeline that Musk has given in interviews leaves a hole between when he left university (and would have lost eligibility for his student visa) and when he says he got his H1-B.

The case for Musk to not have been illegal seeks to be:

- Musk often says factually incorrect things, so we can't assume that the timeline necessarily is what he says it is.

- there are indications that he may have had an E5-B foreign investor visa during the hole where his status is unaccounted for.

... so it may very well just that Musk has inadertently created the impression that he had illegal status for a while because being acknowledge by the government as a wealthy foreign investor before his own big successes doesn't fit the "rags to riches" image he tries to maintain.
