Software Upgrade Discussion

Well we will be updating RF software from this outdated vBulletin to the latest and greatest Xenforo. We have already moved our servers so you should notice an uptick in speed.

You can get a feel for Xenforo at https://www.aspiescentral.com/forums/

And yes we have figured out a way to keep and transfer the Frubal system. It would be helpful if everyone was positive about this upgrade. This will benefit everyone. Thanks!

I know transitions are hard being an old techie and have been on the giving and also the receiving end of change. And looking at the Xenforo site itself, I note lots of add-ons available so I'm guessing that part of the process is choosing which ones to use.

That introduction leads to an offer: do you need beta testers? I love telling people what I think and I'd be happy to apply his talent to RF.

I'm OK with it so long as it's better than the last upgrade we saw...
....which was to delete all the members & posts. Dark days, eh?
I used to work for a unnamed big bank and was involved in many upgrades. Many went well but some resulted in millions of unhappy customers and management uproar and furor.

I've also been involved in forum updates. To me, a big secret is to get the loudmouths and trouble makers, that is, of course us, involved in the process or at least able to poke at the new software before it goes live. Those that do get involved will tend to feel "at least I had a chance to give feedback". Those who complain but do nothing can be politely told that they had their chance and tough cookies.

Part of the duties of mods and perhaps a few others is to be handling the inevitable slew of questions and building FAQs that at least a few might read.

There's also the rule about new software. A few will think "oh boy, something new to learn", dig in and have fun. Most should go along accepting the change. And, of course, there will be those to whom there is no reason for new fangled horseless carriages. What's wrong with horses and buggies anyway.

That would be me.

I had no problem with RF the way it is, that I was aware of. Every time I get "upgraded" I wish it hadn't happened because I don't care about the new features.

If we used horses instead of gasoline there would be more fertilizer and less ISIS, climate change and Ebola.

Work will continue on the import tomorrow evening.
A calm and reassuring post except to the experienced who understand that having a good backout plan rather than a "fix and go forward" mess is a "good thing". I write as one who as part of a couple of "fix and go forward" learning experiences.

Aye, always have a plan B.
A large pot of strong coffee, a pile of various headache, stomache and other remedies and some music also helps. I was known to sing the theme from Man of La Mancha visualizing myself charging IT windmills:

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To strive with your last ounce of courage
To run where the brave dare not go

wrll..... 90 percent of my activity on the forum, viewing, posts, replies etc. is from my smartphone... but I notice from the home page if I hold the phone in portrait position I cannot see the post titles on the right side but only the forum sections on the left side. Nor can I scroll or pan to the right in holding the phone in portrait on the home page. I have to hold the phone in landscape position and then I see both the forum sections on the left pane and the last posting title on the right adjacent pane on the home page.

Also... are graphics allowed on the signature? They seem to have vanished?

This may sound like a dumb question but what has been upgraded? As of yet I haven't noticed any improvement.

First of all, thank you for the effort in re-decorating RF :)

Is there customization available?

I'd like to change the background color to a color of my choice, if allowed to.
