Solid Ice!

doppelganger

This city (in south central Texas) is now coated in 3/4 inches of SOLID ICE after two unrelenting days of freezing rain.

If you were waiting for hell to freeze over, this is probably as close as you're likely to see.

Wow...hope it does not get any worse. Ice storms can be very destructive and dangerous...worse than deep snow like we've got here!

And yikes! If hell is freezing over I've got to go tend to my ducks (quite a few left to be put in a row).

Same in Austin. The temperature is just starting to come above freezing but the weather report says we will get more sleet and ice rain tonight and start all over again tomarrow. I think Friday is suppose to be the last day.

I spent 4 hours trapped on an overpass this morning, in between a wreck and the police closing the overpass waiting for a sand truck. Fun! (NOT)

Don't worry -- ducks are fine down to 0 degrees. :D

Wow. It sounds like Dallas didn't get near as much precipitation as South Texas. We only got a small blanket of ice. But then again, that was still enough to close most businesses including the company I work for, although I still have to work from home instead :(.

That makes me shiver just looking at it! In upstate NY I see the black ducks floating in the semi-frozen lakes all winter and it just makes me marvel that they can survie doing that. And it makes me want to give them corn even though I know I'm not supposed to.

Too bad our oleanders aren't ducks. :(

Just trying to get to work........like any other morning.

They didn't shut down a lot of businesses in anticipation of the storm?

I learned to drive in the winter in Michigan, so I know there's a world of difference between driving in snow and in ice. Even I don't drive in ice.

I know people here in Atlanta tend to panic over the slightest hint of snow or ice, but it's not quite as unreasonable as people in the north usually think it is.

I don't imagine Texas has a huge supply of salt trucks or heaps of salt either. ;)

Your lack of imagination would be most appropriate. :)

On the plus side, my daughter is totally digging it!

I grew up and learned to drive in Mich. as well. We use sand down here; most ice usually melts before the end of the day anyway. I think I would have been fine by myself; my AWD truck is very good on slippery stuff, but with an accident blocking the ramp ahead of me, and the police closing it after, there wasn't much I could do.

As for closing businesses, the forecasts kept shifting. This was first forecast to hit us Sunday evening, then kept pushing out. Yesterday evening, they didn't think we would actually freeze, which turned out to be the case. Only the overpasses were really bad in Houston; the non-elevated roadways weren't a particular problem.

I learned to drive in Montreal, which is part of the snow belt. Additionally, we often had freezing rain or ice storms so we got used to it. It isn't any fun, that's for sure and I feel for all you folks who aren't used to that kind of weather being subjected to it. Hope all is back to normal soon!

Oh, my gosh, I would hate that! Here in Salt Lake City, nighttime lows have been in the single-digits for the past 6 nights, but at least it's been dry and we don't have to drive on a sheet of ice! Would somebody care to remind me again what's so great about winter?

I'm sure everything is at a halt...how to be prepared for something that never happens???? I'm sure it's as beautiful as it is damaging and frustrating! Hang in there!

Wow! How awful.....here, we are having an extremely mild winter - the only thing we are experiencing is more than average rainfall, accompanied by 70 m.p.h gales........"Hold on to your hats".........:D
