Some Heresy....The Expanse...Better Than Star Trek & Star Wars

The Hammer

Any fans of The Expanse here?
It's more political & more sci fi than either of those 2 sci fantasy franchises.
And the acting is far far better.

An interesting feature is that the Martians are accustomed to less gravity.
The Belters are accustomed to no gravity at all.
Caution....a torture scene....

This is a show I've been meaning to watch, it looks great, but I don't have Amazon, unfortunately. Ugh

Political....but without any Trumps, Bidens, Clintons, Pelosis, etc.

Political was used in your description so....nope

Political
1. relating to the government or the public affairs of a country.
2. relating to the ideas or strategies of a particular party or group in politics.
3. interested in or active in politics.

Politics is more interesting (or less grating) when we
see new characters in new settings. I'll watch nothing
with real politicians in it, eg, movies about Clintons,
Bushes, Reagan, Nixon, etc. I've seen enuf of them.

Dune is another highly political movie. I can enjoy
hating Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. But I eschew
having any feelings at all towards real politicians.

And based on past post interactoin...do I like Dune?

You needn't like any particular movie or TV show about
politics. Shirley, you've enjoyed something that had
political themes? House Of Cards, Doctor Strangelove,
The Manchurian Candidate?

yes, old movies, but with the overly political atmosphere both on and off RF that overly politicizes absolutely everything to ridiculous levels.... add to that I work in a political atmosphere as well.... I do not enjoy anything that is political...and tend to avoid it if at all possible... the ONLY political thing you might see me watching are rather old movies on TCM

I know some guys who actually enjoy watching presidential
candidates debate....if it can even be called "debate". They
strike me as feuding backstabbing combatants trying to out
zing the other. Utterly offensive & without redeeming value.

That's my limit. But House Atreides being maneuvered into
a trap on Arrakis....that I can tolerate.

Yes and I know some guys that enjoy that too, and there are those that enjoy House Atreides being maneuvered into a trap on Arrakis...more power to them...however...I am not one of them...... I think dune is ridiculously pretentious...others love it...good for them.... again...I am not one who likes it

Good show, but the comparison is as apples to oranges. The Expanse is closer to Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. That is its parent, not Star Trek nor Star Wars.

The Expanse speaks to a different set of problems, a post cold-war world. It has access to music technology from the 70's 80's and 90's. James Holden is, like Buck Rogers, the perfect man. He has an Eagle Man best friend, a Dr. Theophilus, a Princess Ardala, a Pandaman, a Tigerman and even a Twiggy if you look for it. Star Gates. Hello? The Expanse is Buck Rogers in the 4000th century.

It makes the same mistakes as Star Trek -- using current technology to represent future. They use flat screens. These will soon be antiquated as you darn well know. They're going to look silly and antique to the next generation. They use sliding doors. Dum. Nobody would use sliding doors in space.

"Mistakes" in sci fi are a matter of degree.
Compare...
SW & ST: Ships fly thru space as though the vacuum
involves aerodynamics, ie, ships "swoop" around.
Expanse: No swooping.

I never saw any Buck Rogers....it created some
kind of field that repelled me.

I can't blame you. I saw it in reruns as a fairly young person, back when I could enjoy such things.

SW space is not always a vacuum. Hence there is a swooshing sound. Try not to project your ideas of space onto SW. Its sometimes a vacuum but maybe not always. Maybe its only a vacuum out in deep space. They don't say. What right do you have to impose your view?

ST has a lot less swooping if any, and very often noise is an engine noise or a weapons noise as heard from on board ship. Plus there are a few special audio effects thrown in by the ship's onboard computers whenever there is an explosion which could reach and have an impact. Its a kind of alert. The synthesized sound helps the humans who have trouble gauging distance in space. The Vulcans of course don't need such sounds, but the humans do.

Projecting our personal perspective onto sci fi, or any fiction
is unavoidable....nay, essential, since everything is written
for an audience. So the issue is what works & what doesn't.
Sure, space isn't always a vacuum. But when TIE fighters
swoop in battle scenes, they're not in a dense nebula.
So it grates to see them behave aerodynamically.

Ambient noise management strikes me as better done
in The Expanse. It uses silence to greater effect.

I'd ease your pain if I could, but you seem determined to be miserable. How can you deny the report of your own ears? Swooshing means its not happening in a vacuum.

That being said, here is an explanation which may help with your suffering: The movie is written to please children, and children know nothing of vacuum until adults fill their heads with it. Try to be more like a child. That's good advice.

Yes, it has an awesome use of silence but doesn't massacre silence like 2001 and 2010. Now those were some seriously scientific ships, complete with believable doors and hatches. The apes could have been more realistic.

Space has an atmosphere, eh.
You're OK with that. I'm not.

These updates to 2001 were improvements....
