The day of my father's funeral I heard the song from Ecclesiastes, "To every thing there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven." I can't remember who sang it. Probably some of the older RF posters will. It was pretty conforting.

Say Goodbye - Dave Matthews Band
I listened to this song in the car and wept as I went to visit my best friend who I had completely fallen for... I felt like I didn't have a chance to be with someone so loving, brilliant and charming. This song really spoke to the longing I felt for him.

(Now I'm married to him! Yay! *does a little happy dance, gets strange looks from my beloved*)

It was the "Byrds", and the song was 'Turn, turn, turn'.

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones
A time to gather stones together

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time of war, a time of peace
A time of love, a time of hate
A time you may embrace
A time to refrain from embracing

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time to love, a time to hate
A time of peace, I swear it's not too late!

I went through a phase where I loved 60's songs. That's one of my favorites.

Duh! Of course! I went through a phase when I loved '60s music, too. It was in the '60s. :D What made hearing this song even more special that day was the fact that a couple of hours later, the passage of scripture was read at my father's funeral by one of his best friends. I truly believe the message it expresses -- that there is a season and a time to all of God's purposes.

The entire album "Are You With Me?" by Cowboy Mouth has saved my marriage more than once (although some of those times were before I was married...it saved our relationship back then too). All of their songs remind me to shut up and listen and truly communicate and work things out.

Anything by John Lennon. I remember listening to one of his albums when I was very young and walking away thinking, 'Wow!' His music has always spoken to my condition, as it were. I'd also include the Beatles and a couple of tunes by Billy Joel, one of which is titled 'The Piano Man'--the very song that brought to life my want of 'tickling the ebony and ivory.'

One of my great favourites too, which meant all the more when my girlfriend's father told me to read Ecclisiastes.

My most 'poignant' one ?

I was in a mental hospital (18ish), and a girl came in (voluntarily like me). She was Iranian, and no one would speak to her; I befriended her and copied out the words of 'you've got a friend' for her (James Taylor, Tom Paxton, Carole King) amongst many others.

It became our 'cheer up song'; I wanted her to know I was 'there' for her - even after we both left the hospital. She returned to Tehran, and we wrote to one another for a few years.

When you're down and troubled
And you need some loving care
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend

If the sky above you
Grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Keep your head together
And call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knocking at your door

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there

Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold
They'll hurt you, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them
Oh, but don't you let them

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there

The Kingston Trio's "Where are you Going" song was one I grew up with, my dad singing it as a lullaby to my sister and I. It kinda sorta sucked as a lullaby, though, because I would start crying when I heard it, recognizing it as a song of parting. It was played as the 'father/ daughter' dance a week or so ago at her wedding.

Crowded House's Better Be Home Soon...

Beautiful song... gives ya the chills.

Somewhere deep inside
Somethings got a hold on you
And its pushing me aside
See it stretch on forever

I know Im right
For the first time in my life
Thats why I tell you
Youd better be home soon

No I am not going to tell here, will let you do some research:p and see if you are as amazed as I was.

I have always liked this one--it doesn't get much play time even on the oldies stations.
Do You Know.............the Diana Ross version.

Do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you
Where are you going to?
Do you know...?

Do you get
What you're hoping for
When you look behind you
There's no open door
What are you hoping for?
Do you know...?

Once we were standing still in time
Chasing the fantasies
That filled our minds
You knew how I loved you
But my spirit was free
Laughin' at the questions
That you once asked of me

Do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you
Where are you going to?
Do you know...?

Now looking back at all we've planned
We let so many dreams
Just slip through our hands
Why must we wait so long
Before we'll see
How sad the answers
To those questions can be

Do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you
Where are you going to?
Do you know...?

Do you get
What you're hoping for
When you look behind you
There's no open door
What are you hoping for?
Do you know...?

Both sides now.Joni Mitchell................................This one gets to me.

Rows and floes of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons evrywhere
Ive looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on evryone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
Ive looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
Its cloud illusions I recall
I really dont know clouds at all

Moons and junes and ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As evry fairy tale comes real
Ive looked at love that way

But now its just another show
You leave em laughing when you go
And if you care, dont let them know
Dont give yourself away

Ive looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
Its loves illusions I recall
I really dont know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say I love you right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
Ive looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say Ive changed
Well somethings lost, but somethings gained
In living evry day

Ive looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
Its lifes illusions I recall
I really dont know life at all
Ive looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
Its lifes illusions I recall
I really dont know life at all
