Where I live 175K salary will let you live like a king.

And if you moved to Vietnam you could live like the emperor and the pope
both.

Try renting in Manhattan. 40K will get you two rooms; bathroom, and,
the multi purpose room.

speaking of salaries btw.. the congressional salaries are about the
same as first year associates make at the "fab five" law firms in NYC

Not to say I think those toad-frogs that "represent" us in DC are worth
what the are paid.

I'm still miffed at my school teachers that told me you cant get rich in government because it's not designed to enrich people.
Given the looting done by Trump and those close to him, it's not designed to enrich people but it can and is being abused to enrich people.

You know, my mom pointed out to me how the talk
from / about Bill Clinton was that he didnt have a whole
lot of money, and was not much interested in money.

Blame it all on that evil harpy he married, but, IF that
ever had been true, he sure got over it.

Then of course they claimed to leave the white house
broke.

What do you suppose they are worth now?

I dont know if Trump and co. are looting. It would
not be a change style for politicians if they do that.

But if you could find politician one in DC who has a
beginners grasp of what it is to be a fiduciary, and
thinks about what it takes out of an individual taxpayer
to put even a few thousand into t he IRS, IF you could
find such a politician he MIGHT think twice before
putting in a 40,000 dollar telephone booth. Might.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I read an article recently that called congress a "millionaires club".
I do not see how they are called public "servants". Seems to me that their jobs are to find clever new ways to take more of our hard earned money. There is even a new Uncle Sam poster with him pointing a finger saying, "I want yours!!"

It seems during 2004-2006 there was a very sharp upward spike in Congressional pay. What a racket they have going on.

No doubt that was going on long before Trump even made the scene.

Top government officials don't get rich at taxpayer expense, directly.

They vote for things that make their sponsors rich. Then the sponsors make them rich afterwards.

Don't let em fool you. The Clintons had money. They were quite prosperous in Arkansas.

Then of course they claimed to leave the white house
broke.

Note the term "claimed".

Several million no doubt.

I dont know if Trump and co. are looting.

No more so than the myriad of political leaders before them. I can only judge them by my standard of living since he was elected. My business has improved drastically over the wage draining Obama years. Not meant to be a personal shot at our previous president, just a fact of life for me.

One can hope such a mythical creature will one day exist.

That's true of those in Congress. In the administration, the game is different.

And the point about payback after leaving government is a good one. At least people should not be immediately enriched while they're in government.

Actually, this didn't happen.
In context, it's not that hard to figure out. They were talking about their campaign funds, not their personal accounts.

A politician that saves money on rent doesn't sound too bad. At least they're not drowning in "gifts".

Bear in mind that they typically have families & homes elsewhere to support.
PSH! Don't try to convince me they are people, too! :p

Ever live in DC & environs? It's spendy spendy spendy.
But I have no sympathy because none is needed.
Their offices are roomier than Mr Van (although certainly not as well appointed).
I did, but not for very long. I was not a big fan of the area myself.

If you feel they are honourable people, I do not.
I don't see what honorable has to do with it.
Clinton was talking about the campaign funds. Those were extremely low at that point in time. "Broke" was a bit of an exaggeration. But not much.
