Hey I go get the results of the first physical of my life tomorrow. Doc finally convinced me. If it's all good, I'll tell you, but if it's all bad, I'll lie about it. Curious about B12, iron, Vitamin D, cholesterol, blood sugar, and lung function mainly. If it's all good, I ain't gettin' another one til I'm 80.

I'm a stubborn old doctor hater with great medical insurance. :)

My insurance is great too, get through work. Still don't want a massive bill your insurance can only cover so much. Plus I want to avoid that dangerous injury in the first place.

Well done! A year is a great mile stone and proves that you can do this long term if you really believe in it. I suppose the trick is getting past the desire to eat meat.

I've gone about a month without dairy now and it only took a week to stop craving it, which I am shocked about. But everyone is different. Some people crave meat for the rest of their lives and others get over it very quickly.

One thread in which I will refrain from posting. Yes, vegetarianism is better than non-vegetarianism, which is after all, subservience to tongue. Congrats Kalidas.

Congratulations Kalidas

Now all you have to do is become a wizard of a good vegetable cook and convert the wife :p

Just keep telling her how great you feel, and how many health benifits there are most the vegetarian women I know have amazing skin and hair and dont carry weight like meet eaters unless they over indulge in the dairy and sweets.

And the biggest benifit of all is being able to look animals in the face without having to explain away ones guilt.

So realy I think you have every excuse to be ''prettu excited'', I think you should celebrate with a great big eggles cake every year.

"The same way cows get protein, what did you think they just magically manifested protein out of thin air?"

The average person can get enough protein without meat. Even bodybuilders can. Look up Bill Pearl. Just as a point of fact however, as for how herbivores extract nutrients, they graze all day and have a completely different digestive system. Despite what people will say, it's a biological and evolutionary fact that ours is more like a carnivores', inasmuch as it's shorter and simpler than a herbivore's. It's a compromise based on our evolution as omnivores.

Most people gain weight on vegetarian. (SO MUCH YUMMY RICE AND BREAD)

I can attest to this. I have gained about 4 lbs in the past few weeks. I fear that unless I seriously cut calories, like to 1600-1800 calories, and/or make dairy the bulk of my calories and nutrient macros (I do best on a paleo-type diet... meat, leaves, berries, roots and tubers), I will gain back much of the weight I lost (30 lbs). I am insulin resistant; and there is no two ways about it that a vegetarian diet is carb-heavy and contraindicated to anyone with insulin resistance or diabetes. The American Diabetes Association has finally realized this. Any food logging and tracking tool like fitday or myfitnesspal will show that a vegetarian diet is carb-heavy. I'm going to have to start tracking again and tweak the macros.

I never thought I'd say this, but I actually found it's not that hard. I really have no desire for it anymore; the thought of eating it repulses me. And this is only a few weeks. When we see a tv advert for Longhorn Steakhouse ot Golden Corral, or some such place, my spouse says off-handedly "mm... that's looks good". I want to go throw up. Really.

I will say that while I still crave it sometimes, when I smell cooking meat (Beef especially) All I can smell is the blood.

That was my mother's experience but her vegetarianism initially wasn't intentional but circumstantial. For a few months she had no access to meat and so lived off veggies that she grew herself. Then when she went to the city and had meat it made her very ill. Since then the sight and smell make her want to throw up- this was some 30 years ago and she still can't handle it.

I never really missed it. As long as I have something to fill my stomach I'm a happy camper.

I missed it a bit for a short time, maybe 3 months.

On another note, I got the physical results. My B12 was at 275 ( I have no idea what the numbers mean.) Doc said normal was 150. Iron was higher than normal. He said 'leafy greens'. All else was normal, even lung function after 10 years of smoking or so.

So more credence to that off little but persistent myth about B12. I take a supplement about once every two weeks, and I do eat some cheese and yoghurt.

That is interesting, thank you for sharing. Glad everything is good!
I'm of two minds when it comes to vitamins. I just got sucked into (by myself that is) to buy two bottles yesterday.
But I don't want to take them everyday, I try to eat very healthy food and I eat a lot so I'm probably fine.

Maybe I should take it weekly or every other week too?

I don't think so. It's not necessary. I used to never take it. My wife has some sitting in the kitchen on the counter. I just take on some silly whim, "Oh yeah, there's that B12 stuff, maybe I should have one" and I'll eat one, then forget about it again for a week, or 3 months.

But like you, we eat ridiculously healthily. I actually do think greens are one secret. In summer I eat kale or swiss chard, daily, and not just some small portion either. Our French fry replacement is yellow string beans. :)

This (physical) was just confirmation to how I feel.

Thats good.

I am actually against the use of vitamin supplements. They do not get absorbed the way your body is meant to absorb vitamins and so are not very successful many times. I am of the opinion that if you want a particular nutrient or vitamin just buy the food that contains it.
