Why do you suppose Russia and China are trying to sway the election in Trump's favor? Is it because they know he'll severely weaken the U.S.?

It could be that. I could see where they would try to influence U.S. policy or U.S. public opinion - or just try to hack in to U.S. computer networks for whatever nefarious or covert purpose they might have. From the article:

Beijing sees little advantage in supporting one presidential candidate over the other, intelligence analysts say. Instead, China’s disinformation efforts focus on campaign issues particularly important to Beijing — such as American policy toward Taiwan — while seeking to undermine confidence in elections, voting and the U.S. in general.

Conceivably, anyone from any country can post on US-based websites and advocate for their own cause or their country's interests. But they mention that it could be a significant problem in the future:

Compared with armed conflict or economic sanctions, online influence operations can be a low-cost, low-risk means of flexing geopolitical power. Given the increasing reliance on digital communications, the use of online disinformation and fake information networks is only likely to increase, said Max Lesser, senior analyst for emerging threats at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a national security think tank in Washington.

“We’re going to see a widening of the playing field when it comes to influence operations, where it’s not just Russia, China and Iran but you also see smaller actors getting involved,” Lesser said.

That list could include not only nations but also criminal organizations, domestic extremist groups and terrorist organizations, Lesser said.

No one can have any influence over those who refuse to be influenced, but I sometimes wonder if the internet and technology have gone beyond any real positive control. Isn't there a way to ferret out and identify these fake accounts? Is there no defense against this, or has the internet just turned into some kind of lawless, "Wild West" of the world?

Of course.

And yet so many Americans are so busy hating and blaming each other that they don't even care. They'd side with our enemies just to spite their own fellow countrymen. And Trump is playing on this idiotic bile in every campaign speech.

Trump severely weakened America during his 4 years as president.
Our enemies want a weaker America and are targeting the country from the inside out.
Another Trump presidency would further weaken and destabilize America and continue to degrade the country.
Trump has sided with Russia and Putin over American intelligence agencies and he continues to foster a weak confidence in America.
Just look at the damage that has been done and where America is today. If Hillary had won, America would be in a much better position.
The 2016 election showed that many voters (conservatives and Bernie supporters) were easily tricked by Russian propaganda.

And your big brother told you that that candy was yucky and he would give you the good one and you fell for it giving him the candy he wanted in the first place.

Are MAGAts really this simple?

About as simple as the candy flavor of dictator on day 1. I know already the left is that simple.

Those were two questions, but they were rhetorical. The answers were obvious to most of us, but not you.

We know that Putin got caught interfering in the US election again. For Donald Trump again. So it finally got through to him that meddling in US politics on behalf of Trump was a bad look for Trump. So he figured out how he could help Trump by publicly endorsing Harris--grinning and mocking the gullibility of American voters. He wasn't wrong in 2016. They literally broke out champanskoe in the Kremlin and cheered the election results in the Duma. Moscow knows what is good for Russia and bad for America, but half the American population does not.
