Break my body with the back of your hand
Doesn't make sense from where I stand
Baby, baby, oh, why you wanna mess it up?
Sooner or later I'll find my place
Find my body, better fix my face
Please don't ask me
How I've been getting off

Ha, no, please don't ask me
How I've been getting off

It's a fine line between pleasure and pain
You've done it once, you could do it again
Whatever you done, don't try to explain
It's a fine, fine line between pleasure and pain
(It's all the same)
Sometimes it's hard to be a woman
Giving all your love to just one man
You'll have bad times
And he'll have good times
Doin' things that you don't understand
But if you love him you'll forgive him
Even though he's hard to understand
And if you love him, oh be proud of him
'Cause after all he's just a man
Stand by your man
Give him two arms to cling to
And something warm to come to
When nights are cold and lonely

Taking her seat at the bar
She don't talk to anyone
Plane leaving soon for afar
Where she don't know anyone
She thinks of her precious times
There's no-one she leaves behind
Who could change her mind

Is this the way it's gonna be forever?
Is this the way it's gonna be forever?
Is this the way it's gonna be forever now?
Precious and few are the moments we two can share
Quiet and blue, like the sky, I'm hung over you
And if I can't find my way back home, it just wouldn't be fair
'Cause precious and few are the moments we two can share
Baby, it's you on my mind, your love is so rare
Being with you is a feeling I just can't compare
And if I can't hold you in my arms, it just wouldn't be fair
'Cause precious and few are the moments we two can share

When you're feeling love's unfair
You just ask the lonely
When you're lost in deep despair
You just ask the lonely
Bring back that lovin' feelin'
Whoa, that lovin' feelin'
Bring back that lovin' feelin'
'Cause it's gone, gone, gone
And I can't go on, whoa-oh
Bring back that lovin' feelin'
Whoa, that lovin' feelin'
Bring back that lovin' feelin'
'Cause it's gone, gone, gone

Only the lonely
Only the lonely

Only the lonely
Know the way I feel tonight
Only the lonely
Know this feeling ain't right

There goes my baby
There goes my heart
They're gone forever
So far apart

There goes my baby
Movin' on down the line
Wonder where, wonder where
Wonder where she is bound?

I broke her heart
And made her cry
Now I'm alone, so all alone
What can I do? What can I do?

(There goes my baby) Whoa
(There goes my baby) Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(There goes my baby) Whoa
(There she goes) Yeah (There she goes)

Seems like the other day
My baby went away
He went away 'cross the sea
It's been two years or so
Since I saw my baby go
And then this letter came for me
It said that we were through
He found somebody new
Oh, let me think, let me think, what can I do?
Oh no, oh no
Oh no-no-no-no-no

(Remember) walkin' in the sand
(Remember) walkin' hand in hand
(Remember) the night was so exciting
(Remember) smile was so inviting
(Remember) then he touched my cheek
(Remember) with his fingertips
Softly, softly we'd meet with our lips

Whatever happened to
The boy that I once knew?
The boy who said he'd be true
Oh, what will happen to
The life I gave to you?
What will I do with it now?
(Remember) walkin' in the sand
(Remember) walkin' hand in hand
(Remember) the night was so exciting
(Remember) smile was so inviting
(Remember) then he touched my cheek
(Remember) with his fingertips
(Remember) softly
(Remember)
One month ago today
I was happy as a lark
But now I go for walks
To the movies, maybe to the park
I have a seat on the same old bench
To watch the children play, huh
You know tomorrow is their future
But for me just another day
They all gather 'round me, huh
They seem to know my name
We laugh, tell a few jokes
But it still doesn't ease my pain
I know I can't hide from a memory
Though day after day I've tried
I keep sayin' she'll be back
But today again I've lied
Oh, I see her face everywhere I go
On the street and even at the picture show
Have you seen her
Tell me have you seen her
Oh, I hear her voice as the cold winds blow
In the sweet music on my radio
Have you seen her
Tell me have you seen her
Why, oh, why
Did she have to leave and go away?
Oh...oh...oh...oh...oh...
I've been used to havin' someone to lean on
And I'm lost, baby, I'm lost
Oh, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Have you seen her
Tell me have you seen her [Tell me have you seen her]

I'm a picker
I'm a grinner
I'm a lover
And I'm a sinner
I play my music in the sun

I'm a joker
I'm a smoker
I'm a midnight toker
I get my lovin' on the run
Goodbye to you, my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we've climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and ABC's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees
Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time

Bayo, Delia said, just give me your gun
He shot my Billy dead now I'm gonna see him hung.
She went down to DeLion's club through Billy DeLion's blood
Stepped up to Stagger Lee at the bar,
Said, "Buy me a gin fizz, love."

[listen beyond the instrumental to hear what Delia does to Stagger Lee at the bar; not good for him]

Mark 1:35:

The legend of Stagger Lee might be of interest to some. The story is old, probably has some truth and some embellishment to it, and has been made into many songs including this one from the Grateful Dead, who seem to have invented and inserted a cop named Bayo as well as Billy D's wife Delia DeLion, the hero of the story (closing refrain: "The song that Delia sung was Look Out Stagger Lee"). They also changed the year of the incident from 1895 to 1940. You'd need to listen from the beginning to get all of that.

This is how legends evolve through time, as different artists tell the same story a little differently over time:

Stagger Lee - Wikipedia
As Stagger Lee lit a cigarette she shot him in the balls
Blew the smoke off her revolver, had him dragged to city hall
Bayo, Bayo, see you hang him high
He shot my Billy dead and now he's got to die.
Delia went a walking down on Singapore Street
A three-piece band on the corner played "Near My God to Thee"
But Delia whistled a different tune, what tune could it be?

I left my heart to the sappers 'round Khe Sanh
And my soul was sold with my cigarettes to the black-market man
I had the Vietnam cold turkey from the ocean to the Silver City
And it's only other vets could understand

About the long forgotten dockside guarantees
How there were no V-day heroes in 1973
How we sailed into Sydney Harbour, I saw an old friend but I couldn't kiss her
She was lined, and I was home to the lucky land

She was like so many more from that time on
Their lives were all so empty until they found their chosen one
And their legs were often open, but their minds were always closed
And their hearts were held in fast suburban chains

And the legal pads were yellow, hours long, pay packets lean
And the telex writers clattered where the gunships once had been
Car parks made me jumpy, and I never stopped the dreams
Or the growing need for speed and Novocaine

So, I worked across the country from end to end
Tried to find a place to settle down where my mixed up life could mend
I held a job on an oil-rig, flying choppers when I could
But the nightlife nearly drove me 'round the bend

And I've travelled 'round the world from year to year
And each one found me aimless, one more year the worse for wear
And I've been back to south-east Asia and the answer sure ain't there
But I'm drifting north to check things out again
Yes, I am

Well, the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
And only seven flying hours and I'll be landing in Hong Kong
And there ain't nothing like the kisses from a jaded Chinese princess
I'm gonna hit some Hong Kong mattress all night long
