I want Khilafah back
By external existence I think it means a body, the body which is limited by the laws of the realm that it is in.
In this life, this universe, our human body is that external existence. If our soul didn't have this body, our life experience would differ from this current life. As it was mentioned, the soul expands, it is not bound by the laws of physics and therefore our earthly existence would be very different.
It would basically be like air, it is spread out, but just that it has a consciousness. So in order to separate if from the other existing laws, it has been confined into a material body.
The soul on it's own is alive, it has consciousness and depending on what laws and in which realm it cannot break them, it has a form. On earth if it didn't reside in the human body, it would be still the same as we are now, it just that it probably wouldn't have a shape/form due to it's expanding nature.
Once we die, unlike in Hindu belief, the soul is conscious and remembers everything. 'We', literally, are the soul and not the body. The body is just used by 'us' (the soul) and once the soul departs, the body becomes nothing.
