What is "gender" (in terms of spirit) anyways?
When I am in jhana and dwelling in consciousness (instead of the mind or body), my consciousness does not perceive of itself as having an innate, immutable gender. In fact, it has "characteristics" of both "gender poles", being both receptive and expansive, absorbing and giving, quiet and expressive, etc.
in classical taoism (which is the root of metaphysical taoism) the visible is the manifestation of the invisible, just as the visible universe, tai-ji, is a manifestation of the invisible cosmic mother, wu-ji. (tao te ching ch. 1.) from that paradigm, the visible person is also a reflection of some aspect of the inner person. hence, the invisible inner self must have a coding for the visible sexual form and also for gender behavior. duality is inherent in all things. (tao te ching ch. 42.) in practice, in any relationship, a person's behavior may be yang and then spontaneously turn to yin and vice versa, but the individual has a structural blueprint for the sexual form that is independent of behavior and changes slowly in a predetermined manner over time.
