I agree. And, in spite of some clunkiness have managed to surprise me with good plots. The last one especially had an ending that surprised me. I had expected a classic ending but was actually happy not to get it.To be honest I think Seth McFarlane's Orvil is more Trek like than this show. Granted more self aware of its silliness.

Yeah. I think the original series had the best characters, stories, and sense of humanity despite the lack of CGI technology. A well-told story sparks the imagination, something special effects can never make up for.If you're vexed by the same thing I see, it's going to always be the case that
technology will be backward in a way which requires the captain or senior
officers to do something a probe could do. Stories demand human drama,
even if it means ignoring good judgement or appropriate technology.
