You're absolutely correct.Lord of the Rings is by far superior, in story line, acting quality, special effects and cinematic presentation.
LotR is a good deal older than SW.You're absolutely correct.
Yet LOTR is still less compelling.
About the only popular culture references to LOR I can think of are "My Precious!" from Smeagol (the one compelling character).
Star Wars, clumsy as it is, endures & pervades.
Neither.Which is better?
Star Wars is best, even if it's just for the hope that Jar Jar Binks will be brutally murdered.
Acting & script quality.....pish posh! While I agree whole heartedly with your wish to see Jar Jar brutally murdered, I'm afraid that LOTR gets my vote as well. One of the problems with the Star Wars franchise in my view are the three 'newer' movies - it would be difficult to find films filled with more wooden acting than these. There may be too much manly crying in LOTR but I've never felt like banging my head against a wall while viewing them as I have just to drown out the sound of Teen Anakin's angst or Liam Neeson's phoned-in performance. Natalie Portman is a good actor but you'd never know it watching her cement faced expression throughout these films. I blame Lucas and no other - he gave them nothing to work with.
