I'm sure gun worshippers will dismiss this but it's worth noting that even a cop can do dumb things with a gun in school. It's just another example of how having everyone carrying guns is not the answer to gun violence.

The teacher was identified as Dennis Alexander, a reserve police officer for the Sand City Police Department and a Seaside councilman. Gun safety class? He should have made sure that the no round was in the chamber and the magazine out before having the weapon on campus. There are other rules to prevent negligent discharge. This should not have happened if he followed his own rules. At school I wouldn't expect one, but if you clear a lot of weapons, then more places should have weapon clearing barrels and large, clear posted instructions on how to use.

Yep, teachers really need guns though! Don't they? That way when the police arrive, they can have no idea which person with the gun to go after.

When you realize that the NRA actually doesn't care if our society turns into open street warfare or school battle zones with everyone firing on each other and the police, as long as they keep making money- you see they're really disgusting and deplorable.

You say "even a cop", but I've been pointing out that much of
military & police training is woefully wrong regarding safety.
Some basic rules I'd impose.
- Always carry chamber empty (semi-auto).
- Carry the gun in a secure concealed holster (which of course, completely covers the trigger).
- On school grounds: Leave the gun in the holster, unless attacked.
- Never put a finger on the trigger unless intending to fire.
- Know that all guns are loaded (even when they're not).

I had to follow ALL those rules when I was in Iraq. (Except the concealed holster) Before entering any building on base we had to clear our weapons in the clearing barrels.

I know that some military types receive better training,
which is why I added the qualifier "much". Of all I've
met, I find much diversity of skills out there.

One moron and we're supposed to keep schools as gun free zones, if that's what actually happened. It wouldn't surprise me if he was a leftist nutjob out to make a point.

That said, I think there is a more preferable solution: having police substations in schools, especially high schools where most shootings by ADD drugged students or just plain psychos, occur.

Sorry I disagree with item 1. The time to draw, chamber a round, aim, and fire could cost one their life. That is unless they use the IDF method and are really really good at it. Remember a firearm is only as safe as the person operating the firearm. Some that carry the 1911 style carry in Condition 1 "cocked and locked" it is as safe as the operator. Also 99.999999% of holsters cover the trigger.
My daily carry is ether a Glock or S&W M&P Shield (no manual safety, trigger safety only) and a round is chambered.
The last one is a modified standard statement in all firearm safety courses. I follow the golden rule "Treat all firearms as if they are loaded".

No not all firearm safety is "common sense". There are a lot of yahoos that have little or no common sense, and that includes those that use/carry firearms and those that don't.

Teachers are hard to come by. I seriously believe that they will always clear a weapon when not intending to use it after this incident. Either that or remove his right to carry in the school until they attended a refresher course in what he was "attempting" to teach.
