Studying Islam - Where to begin?

Hi guys, I'm new to learning about Islam. Can anyone recommend some good book or links to start learning more about it? I know thats a broad question, but I love to study different religions as much as I can to learn more. Are there any essential books (besides the Quran)? Any good websites to check out? Thank you.

I'm not Muslim myself, but when I was trying to learn more about Islam I watched some videos from Yusuf Estes on YouTube and found them very helpful at the time. Sorry I can't recommend any good books but I wish you luck on your journey!

A good book on Islam I would recommend is about the life of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, as it gives the reader an overview of the life of Prophet Muhammad, and at the same time an understanding of some of the basic foundations of Islam

In the Footsteps of the Prophet: Lessons from the Life of Muhammad

By Tariq Ramadan. Oxford, $23 (208p) ISBN 978-0-19-530880-8

Salam. Welcome to the forum.

You can check this thread: For A Year of Islamic Studies | ReligiousForums.com

There are 52 great book/lets there. You can download and pick the best ones.

And if you study them, please be slow yet steady in your journey-research. Also, you can skip the Imamah (Imamate) articles in a few books as they are related to just shia Islam and not shared by all Islamic denominations thus not necessary for starters.

Blessings on your journey towards God/perfection. ma salam :)

'Islam, It's meaning for Modern Man' by Chaudhry Zafrullah Khan.

An very good, general book covering the basics with enough detail to be interesting but without dogma and sectarianism.
Sir Ch. Zafrullah Khan was secretary general of UN and Judge at the International court of Justice, a well respected and scholarly Muslim with an excellent command of English.

I personally suggest inquiring about the five pillars of Islam first here on RF. What defines a religion I believe is the basics it stands for. Everything are complements to support the main cause.

My opinion :)

Also, I suggest to not take Islam extremely serious. Try to have breaks and fun between sessions. Try to be flexible in understanding its different parts.

I loved The Heart of Islam by Seyyed Hossein Nasr -- this book was extremely enlightening and helped me understand the core essence of Islam.

I'd also recommend What Everyone Needs to Know About Islam by John Esposito.

Karen Armstrong's Islam is also very good but totally dry, and really more about the history of Islam than the tenets of belief or anything like that.
