Stumbling into the Forums

Just a bit curious here.

I happened to find these forums by accident a couple of years ago and just haven't been able to pull myself away.

Obviously, all of us were looking for some type of spiritual or philosophical insight while searching through the interwebs and I would just like to give cheers to that.

What were you looking for, when you stumbled into the Forums?

I wanted somewhere to discuss religion and philosophy seriously, as opposed to Yahoo! Answers and other forums I had been on where it was essentially nothing but mockery.

But aside from that I haven't experienced such tolerant and serious people here or anywhere else on the internet or in real life when it comes to talking about religion and philosophy.

Though I have to admit that there have been a few major bumps in the road here with other people and there is the irreplaceable troll or narrowminded person that shows up every now and then.

I had been looking for a community (still am, but less than before) where I could talk about magic and be honest about my practices and beliefs, but I didn't really expect myself to find it on the internet.

I actually stumbled into RF entirely by accident. I was trying to figure out where I fit in the scope of ideas and was reading some text from the Temple of Set when I came upon a word I didn't understand. So I entered it in Google and right on the first page there was some post by Adramelek that explained the thing just wonderfully. (Sorry, I really can't remember what it was anymore. ) I closed the page and kept on reading, but for the next days the thought of the forum just didn't want to leave me alone. So I came back, actually read through a lot of DIRs, felt like home and stayed.

There is a million things I could say to this, a mixture of offensive and defensive postures...>.<

What are you praying for?

I wanted a global multicultural community to discuss world religion with. I found some great thinkers, and individuals here. People I generally feel very comfortable around. The diversity of ideas is also one of the strong points of the forum. As a person who is open minded to hear about every religious or philosophical perspective this is the ideal forum.

Like many others have said already, I was looking specifically for a place to discuss religion-related topics where the forum population represented a diverse range of beliefs instead of, say, a Christian-specific or atheist-specific board. The diversity represented here impressed me, so I joined and have managed to stick around.

I really don't understand. Why do you seem to be so interested in how other people live their lives? Why would God need you to pray for someone you know nothing about and whose beliefs you might not even understand? I would imagine there are lots of people right around you in your life who need help and love and perhaps even a prayer now and then.

I was looking for a civil place to discuss religion and find more information on Judaism. When I saw the DIRs, I knew this was it.

In order to find people like me she must look within, and pray for what she perceives as me (though it is really her).

What were you looking for, when you stumbled into the Forums?

At first, I had little interest in forums of this sort. I had an interest in philosophy, and the psychology of religion, but I could fulfill that interest by reading scholarly articles and by reading a diverse set of religious texts.

I noticed, however, that my boyfriend was spending a great deal of time on a forum of religious people (not this one). Seeing as how he's an agnostic atheist, I found that odd. I asked him about it and it turns out he joined when he was an agnostic theist, but even after leaving his religion, he liked the people and the place, and he was well-liked and welcomed there, despite mostly debating against them.

So I joined too, since I was surprised to see that although it was a forum with religion as the central concept, it was actually a forum for basically everything (much like this one). I stayed for a while, but eventually he lost interest and stopped posting. I found I liked a lot of the people there, but that the forum had a very strong (and open) bias towards one specific religion. It was in the forum name.

So I left that forum to find a forum that showed no favoritism towards any specific religion or philosophy. Just a platform for discussion, debate, community, etc. This one had a diverse set of people from all major world religions, as well as people of non-religious inclinations and philosophies, and had sufficient membership, so I joined it. I like the place and the people, so I quickly got involved.
