I've always been against conscription. But at least they can opt out of military service if they wish. Working in social services, hospitals, national parks, etc. might be good work experience and help a young person along the career path of their choice. So, if it has to be mandatory, let them choose their own job or which government department they wish to work for.

If I had to make such a choice, I'd volunteer to work for the Ministry of Silly Walks.

The forces points out the other 85 countries that have National Service.Also have the infra structure in place eg housing .Practical issues is now you have both both sexes now.They have to be kitted out they have to be fed.Safeguarding is vip.

I had been very curious about the approach the tories would take. How do you fight effectively from the position they are in? I was expecting culture war hysterics. "Starmer will trans the children, free the rapists and invite the terrorists in" type stuff.

Did not expect this at all. Then they walked it back. Even though I was a very big fan of Corbyn's platform, I didn't think I'd ever see a campaign less politically astute than Corbyn's effort. But here we are.

Still time for it to get down and dirty, I suppose.
