Sunak wants national service!

Hermit Philosopher

Selflessly here for you
Sunak wants all 18-year-olds to do 12 months either in the military or out in civil society

This will no doubt change the dynamic of the election

I wonder how Labour will respond, I will be interested to see

I think this will play well to the political right
Unfortunately, whoever wins the election shall have to implement something like this, not due to ideology but due to our current unstable circumstances. These are lamentably not times of peace.

Humbly,

The army point out.No accommodation exists.Soldiers at present suffer poor accommodation. There will be boys and girls who need to be safeguarded. Great idea for Labour to clobber.

Ha ha! A few weeks before election D-day the Conservatives suddenly get lots of wonderful ideas! It's a pity that they didn't have any during their term in power!
As for National Service, a voluntary National Service/apprenticeship with an income would not be a bad idea because so many of our young can't find anything to do.

I've finally realised what is magic about the "magic money tree" and it is this: the magic money tree only exists for programmes/policies proposed by neoliberals.

For example, a policy foundations suggests that the saftey net for people out of work is insufficient and should be increased: "no magic money tree!!!"

Tories want to pay every 18 year old for 12 months of military service: state is magically capable of funding

Sir Keir ain't much better, imo.
Reform is almost as scary as Liz Truss was.
That's it! The Greens promise to sort out our bus services...... So Thea Barret (my constituency) can have at least one vote. :p

Agreed, Labour do not impress. BUT I'm not marrying Starmer and a vote for Green or LibDem where I live, is a vote for the Tories in all but name.
So, I'm holding my nose and voting least bad.

Conscription is not uncommon in Europe, as mentioned in the article. This is related more to demographics than politics.

I think that we can enjoy freedom of choice, just this time.
The Conservatives cannot win in any case, so even a vote for the Raving Loonies will waste nothing...... !!!
Ms Barret (Greens) seems to be totally upset about bus services around here, so I'll give her one vote, anyway. The country may falter for the loss of my vote to Labour, but Ms Barret will be able to wave one voting slip high!

My constituency has been Tory since before I was born; I have never known anything but Tory MPs.
BUT, if the left unite and agree that Labour is the best bet to beat the Tories (Last election they were c7000 behind Tories) we may have a change.
If we had PR I'd vote Green.

The magic money tree is also available for tories to be able to give contracts to their friends. Paul Daniels would have been very impressed.

Hmmmm.....yes, it could be best for you to concentrate all votes to Labour if you were 7000 down before.

Good luck on this vote.;)
