We are all tied to it. As are cops, homeless people and the Clan. It's a symbol of America, not a holy relic that only has meaning for the armed forces.

Maybe what the NFL needs is another peaceful demonstration that brings back the fans that are obnoxed by the current one.
How about this. Players who oppose elective abortions bring fetus shaped squirt guns, filled with washable fake blood, onto the field and squirt people at random. That's well within their Constitutional Rights.
Isn't it?
It would help alleviate the problem of losing fans over the single issue protests that are all the NFL seems willing to allow at this point.
