"Tom and Jerry Cartoons to Carry Racism Warnings on Amazon Prime

Tom and Jerry cartoons will now carry a warning that some scenes will feature elements of "racial prejudice" which
were once acceptable.

"Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today," it adds.

The warning on the cartoon, which first aired in the 1940s, follows years of criticism over its portal of the character
Mammy Two Shoes, the black maid who famously only showed her face once during the much-loved show."

From what I remember, the maid was never referred to by any name in the cartoons, much less as "Mammy Two Shoes."

Your thoughts?

At least they won't be hiding the cartoons, they way they did with some Betty Boop cartoons.
I can live with the warning, but I hope it evaporates in coming years

The same as the title

Reminds me of when they edited "the n word" out of Huckleberry Finn.

Yeah, that sort of revisionism disturbs me. Sure, Huckleberry Finn had the word '******' in it - but that speaks to the times. It is an awful term, but kids reading HF today deserve to know that it was in common usage back then.
I hate the idea of using political correctness to reimagine and sanitise history.

It's more forward thinking to just accept that it's a product of it's time and move on than it is to get hung up on it.

Anyone who gets offended by that is a dumb ***.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.

Reminds me of the three stooges where Larry gets blackfaced and kneels in front of moe, spreads his arms and says, mammy. Moe clocks him. :D

A lot of cartoons and shows had racial referencing. Tbh rarely did i see black folks cast in any unfavorable light albeit stereo typing could be construed as such. I guess you had to live in the day to understand it all as far as the big screen and entertainment goes.

I agree that a warning is far more preferable than outright pc censorship.

I agree that a warning is far more preferable than outright pc censorship; however, in the Tom and Jerry cartoons I honestly fail to see any racism.

Anybody care to take a stab at explaining it?

My thought is on what basis do Amazon say that it is racist? (I don' t remember the detail of the cartoon).

I guess it's just more of a caricature of a black person than an accurate depiction of a black person?

So, the question then is, what elements of the character are a caricature of a black person?

The job?

The dress?

The voice?

The actions?

The . . . . . ?

And, even if they do reflect some element of black people why would this necessarily amount to a caricature?

Does the site not give a rationale though? Rather than speculate on their reasoning for the warning?

Maybe this is white people apologizing for what they did to black people in the past. "We're sorry that black people were (kinda still are) second-class citizens and this show reminds us of that, so we have to say it."

If im getting actually offensive, someone please tell me.
