Talking past each other.

How often do we talk past each other?

Think about the conversations you witness on this site. Often times it is like a broken record between certain individuals. They rinse and repeat the same arguments on the same topics, with neither side seemingly willing to budge. I think this gets us nowhere, but to each their own.

I wanted to make this thread to ask you to ask yourself if you truly listen to what others are saying. Or do you talk past them, finding more importance in getting verbiage out of your mouth?

It is important that we listen. It is important we keep an open mind and let the others speak.

I tend to agree, although it's not just a matter of listening, but also a matter of understanding and comprehension. Sometimes that might be the fault of the speaker for not properly gauging their audience, or it could also be due to the listener not making a good faith attempt to actively listen and understand what is being said.

Yep, this is certainly the case on almost every debate on abortion, for example, that I have seen/heard.

The question is, are we listening to understand, or just to negate the "opposition"?

And then what happens when we do understand, and the other person is just plain wrong, but wants to keep fighting to prove to themselves how right they are.

I think, as far as the forums go, this is often the case.

Few actually start a debate with the idea "I want to learn about this" or "I want to hear differing opinions so I can better form my own" but rather "I want to mop the floor with those who disagree with me on this".

I attribute this partly to the format of the forum. If we had a threaded presentation, it would be easier to go back and re-read what was said. I notice that quite often I get confused with someone else or what they said. My interlocutor then argues against something I have never said.

The problem is when people ask questions and those questions remain unanswered.
If someone doesn't answer a simple question, asked politely and on topic, it means they are in bad faith.
And they are here not to debate, but to convince themselves of their own fragile convictions.

That would make them (your) inflictions, not (my) convictions.

No, not a given. Sometime people ask loaded questions.
