Teacher's Unions

Which is ironic, as unlike some of their European counterparts, most American unions explicitly reject socialist ideology, and have actively taken part in the anti-socialist purges of America's past.
Self-awareness would be a mighty shock.

As if your personal experience and that of your father and grandfather is the be all end all of unions.
I did not say that nor imply that, so the problem you have is not of my doing. I have a strong belief in democratic values, and unions help to deal with that, thus those with a more authoritarian drift are not at all likely to agree with me.

You is whoever is not part of the union.

Like parents, or government or the employers.
In Calif, the state has little control over the teachers union.

I'd think big government would have more control over teacher's unions. Which is all well and good I suppose as long as your party of preference is running things.
Parents' and teachers' interests are often aligned.

As they say, teachers' working conditions are students' learning conditions.

Sure... for instance, by demanding strong teacher's unions that are especially capable of protecting the common interests of both teachers and students.

I'd expect there'd be little hate for teacher's unions which openly accepted input from the parents.

Isn't that already being handled in the US via school boards, which as far as I can tell seem to have an outsized influence on how schools are being run to begin with?

Seems the parents are the ones fighting the school boards/unions.
Parents' school board fight with teacher unions is just getting started
Did you know that the 1776 Project which this NYP post lionizes as "supporting parents to offset union power" is a nationalist political organization created by Trumpist Republicans with the aim to "abolish critical race theory"?
We are a political action committee dedicated to electing school board members nationwide who want to reform our public education system by promoting patriotism and pride in American history. We are committed to abolishing critical race theory and ‘The 1619 Project’ from the public school curriculum.

Given that little tidbit, how accurate would you figure the rest of the information the NYP provides here actually is, given that it is not even a news article, but an opinion piece to begin with?

Also, how does this tie in with your claim that teachers do not listen to parental complains, and that people are therefore negatively predisposed towards teacher's unions? Do you have any source to back that up, or is this simply conjecture based on anecdotes you read in NYP opinion articles?

I know my paycheck is smaller than it would be because I'm in a (useless) union.

I've heard from others the same. I don't mind taking home less if it is otherwise beneficial to me. I usually don't see the benefits. Other folks get your money and they get to decide what is beneficial to do with it.

Ok, fine.
I offered my opinion. What's your answer to the OP?

Can someone please explain to me why so many people hate teacher's unions? Is it because it is a union? Is it because they are teachers? I am confusion.

One of the things the union is blamed for it is seen as an obstacle to change.
Especially in changing the school calendar. The US is one of the few countries that students have the entire summer off from school, or longer school day, cutting out so many school vacations, on these issues the union objection has been solid. On the other hand, without these unions teachers would have even less respect, especially financial. And of course, if they are going to call for a strike, and often do, it's always a couple days before the start of the new school year.

I've already said my piece. Keep in mind that I work in a teaching job myself, so I am somewhat differently predisposed towards educators than the many people who hold unspoken resentments against them for a variety of reasons.

Also, as a libertarian socialist, I support workplace democracy out of principle.

So you answered this question?
"Can someone please explain to me why so many people hate teacher's unions?"

Which post? Sorry I missed it.

Feel free to browse this thread at your leisure.
And don't worry, I didn't expect you to address any of my arguments.

? So you want a union but don't want to call it a union? Or are they trying to make a union but remove all the parts that make a union effective?
The link I provided isn’t to a union. A professional associate isn’t a union.
