Maybe its related to the fear that they may have lost a phone full of personal information that can reveal things about themselves to any doofus who wants to screw with them.
Yeah, in that case, that's more likely. I've had that happen before. I left my phone in my mom's car before school and, in spite of the fact that I really didn't have much personal information on there, I was paranoid over it, so I chased my mom down and got it before she left. Also, there's a tactile element to it as well. One gets used to having a phone in their pocket, and when they don't have one, they feel insecure. I rarely use my phone at school, though, and most people I know use them profusely, so my scenario may be different.
