Terminally online

an anarchist

Your local loco.
Terminally online is a term used by trendy millennials (like me!). It essentially means you are always online. Your online life takes precedent over your offline life.

I notice a lot of us here… a lot of the time. Me too! I got a new phone with unlimited data this month so I’ve been online a lot. Today, my phone told me I spent an average of eight hours on my phone a day last week! Sheesh, that’s a lot… I’m between jobs so I got nothing but time.

I’m worried I’m becoming terminally online. Got nothing really going for me in my offline life. Online life is nice. And I try to bow out of debates then I come right back…

Anyways, I wanted to ask you if you feel like you are “terminally online” or think you are at risk of becoming terminally online.

What are your thoughts on the topic in general?

My job requires me to be online, and in my downtime, I jump on here to participate or sometimes just lurk.

IRL, I'm not as active as I used to be, especially since my hip decided it no longer wanted to do hip stuff, so if I'm not meditating, at a car show, running an errand, or with family, I'm online because I don't bother with television.

But I consider myself far from being terminally online, at least during non-work hours.

I believe it to be a problem for the future of humanity but it's not a problem for me. I like my alone time especially with nature. At the beach or hiking I'll have my phone for emergencies but that's it. When I go to church I leave it at home. I have also forgotten it plenty of times when traveling and I didn't lose any sleep over it. Of course my childhood was in the early 70's so lack of technology was a part of my life.

I'm extremely limited by what I can do in the 'real world'.

I'm an extroverted person stuck in an introvert's life. I don't seem to be able to change my need for social activity. I do not have the means to change my life at the moment to allow for more face to face interaction.

So I pop in here a lot.

I'm generally not glued to the screen. I load the dishwasher. Check messages. Read outside. Look for new posts. Wrangle a brontosaurus. Make a joke online about it.

I'm not very diverse in my internet usage. I probably use no more than 5 sites per day, if that. This site is my most used.

I view you all as my 'coworkers'. I am at work, and you all keep me company while I'm there.

I don't care if I'm 'terminally online' or not. I'm doing the best I can with what I have to work with.

I'm permanently online because I chose to. I can stop any time. Really.

If you're a Millennial or Gen Z, that's just the norm to connected at the hip to the Internet. It's even worse, if you can imagine that, for Gen Alpha and the younger ones since they started on it at birth, pretty much.

I am terminally online, good days I spend 4-6 hours, bad days can be 10 and upwards. But, on good days, I have made sure that I am meeting my goals and if I meet my goals then I’m not going to be concerned about trying to limit my screen time. The internet is good to learn things and have fun on. It’s not like quitting the internet is going to magically make fill me with a better social life outside of it anyways.

I put in work to my health, my chores, my hobbies, my social life, and my job. If I get all that done I don’t care if i spend the rest of the day online.

Well I've kind of just been on here reading through posts for the past hour, I think because my energy or motivation to do other things is sapped / and I can't quite get up to go do something else right now. But it's maybe not totally a bad thing, I mean I assume I am sharpening my mental world somewhat in a forum, even if it's a little bit. I probably will try to do a walk, and then come back for a nap, if I can. Those are also not exactly ideal things to do, in terms of my idea of ideal productively, but it's alright

I don't see at as a waste of time, I enjoy reading everybody's take on things. And I sometimes I like writing, although I think I hit a lot of mental dead-ends, with my attempted expressions in writing. I don't feel like it's a bad thing necessarily, but there is other stuff I want to do, as long as I'm awake.
