Unfortunately from a pure military strategy point of view it can, in certain circumstances. It gives me no pleasure to wrote that, since I find this sort of action so repugnant.

Yes, in simple terms. Strong retaliation leads to increased radicalisation unless done in an incredibly (and unlikely) controlled c fashion.
Lack of retaliation makes the west look impotent. In a sense any terror strike which is so impactful on the worlwide mefia is a victory for the terrorists regardless of response.

Totally agree. It's hard to even process. A little piece of me just feels numb.

For your information, France and several other countries have declared war on ISIS and are bombing them, and their wives and children??, every day. We are at war with them and they fight back in the only way they know how, which is terrorism, not that much different from the terrorism of having bombs rained down on your heads day in day out. I am in no way justifying the attacks, or claiming any validity to ISIS' extreme reality, I'm just pointing out for those of you asking WHY??? We are at war with them, we somehow consider bombing the hell out of people to be just, and they are at war with us and they somehow consider killing civilians and blowing themselves up to be a just war or Jihad. If we are going to fight people that think that way, its only likely that they are going to have some victories in battle, when most of the victories from our side (bombing ISIS) are considerably more deadly in numbers killed.

Notice France already has a aircraft carrier off Syria's shore and Russia recently supplied Syria with 'Scorcher' missiles that can take down aircraft carriers in one hit ?

French PM Hollande is a liberals liberal, a socialist leading the French socialist party, and he's the one calling for a massively ramped up war against ISIS. When he was elected he greatly increased taxes on the richest French leading many rich including Gerard Depardiue to give up their French citizenship, you can't get any more liberal than raising taxes on the rich, even Obama didn't do that, and Hillary isn't calling for it, Bernie is the only candidate calling for higher taxes, and he's a socialist like Hollande.

Seems a bit of a stretch to think of even Islam vs West as being Islam vs Christianity...considering most of the West is pretty secular or consists of mixed religions.

Its also an outrageous stretch to think more than a small minority of Muslims support or think like ISIS, and that all Muslims are religious, not secular.
