I hope the rest of the country follows suit, but I'm not holding my breath. Real science is winning out in Texas.

"The measure from Republican state Rep. Bill Zedler would prohibit public institutions of higher education from discriminating against or penalizing faculty members or students, in regard to employment or academic support, based on their "conduct of research relating to the theory of intelligent design or other alternate theories of the origination and development of organisms."

There's a damn good reason why Texas is dead last in education in the United States. Heck, it's below a lot of countries.

If the foundation of the scientific method is the falsifiability of a theory, then how is
intelligent design science, given that it cannot be proven false theoretically or empirically?

As long as evolution is treated as a science and also taught, It should be able to stand up against any false science. The professor's results if honest should support evolutionary claims. If any professor's which are caught falsifying data should then be fired.

For science to work all aspects need to be explored fairly.

Good post. I would like to remind people that the falsifying of data is historically on the evolution side.

I agree with the sentiment, but we have to draw a line somewhere. Would we waste time in an astronomy class discussing astrology?

I'm not sure if you have noticed but everywhere we look there is an evolution vs creation debate, but not much astronomy vs astrology debates.

For good reason. No evidence for astrology. However, creationists seem to think there is evidence for their position (but not actually providing any...), and are hell-bent on distorting current thinking on evolution. This has to be counter-acted. That's where the debates arise from.

What does this bill mean? Does it mean that all a professor has to do in announce his/her intention to do research into creationism and they are automatically tenured? Does it mean that Texas universities are legally required to fund research into I.D.?

Is it a good thing for the government to set academic policies for universities?

Could you remind me in more details?
What falsified data are we talking about?

There are really too many for me to document so I'll leave you with a link. One of the most famous was Haekel's faked embryonic drawing when he promoted Darwin's theory by making embryonic stages of humans and animals that fraudulently showed they looked alike. You might have even have seen this in your school books because I heard it was still in there.

I don't have a problem with this unless that professor is actually teaching ID to his/her students.

I support the principal of not discriminating (even on the basis of something I disagree with) but why it the proposed bill limited to discrimination against proponents of ID? If it goes through, it would be illegal to refuse a job to someone who supports ID but legal to deny it to someone who supports evolution (or indeed, anything else).

Unfortunately, that makes me feel this is less about preventing discrimination and more about using the political process to specifically support ID.

A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT relating to prohibiting discrimination by public institutions of higher education against faculty members and students based on their conduct of research relating to intelligent design. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 51, Education Code, is amended by adding Section 51.979 to read as follows: Sec.51.979.PROHIBITION OF DISCRIMINATION BASED ON RESEARCH RELATED TO INTELLIGENT DESIGN. An institution of higher education may not discriminate against or penalize in any manner, especially with regard to employment or academic support, a faculty member or student based on the faculty member's or student's conduct of research relating to the theory of intelligent design or other alternate theories of the origination and development of organisms. SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this Act takes effect September 1, 2011.

Theory of Intelligent Design? This Bill should fail based entirely on this misleading wording.

Intelligent Design was determined by the United States District Court to be creationism, which is a religious activity rather than a secular one.

Nobody has to be protected from teaching evolution, at least at this time frame. I would support the teaching of Darwinian evolution as an alternative to ID, side by side. I'm for following where the science where it leads, the real science that is, not the speculation.
