I used to find the desert very calming, peaceful and conducive to a meditative frame of mind. The silence was to me the most unique sensation. And the colours, in rocky or mountainous desert, can be spectacular.

But I speak as a European city dweller, who only experienced the deserts of the UAE for a brief period of my life. I expect the novelty wears off.

Sand is just eroded rock particles. For example, the reason why the Dutch coast is all sand dunes is because it is the Rhine delta. The Rhine has brought down these rock particles for hundreds of thousands of years and they have accumulated. The sea itself also erodes rocky coasts and produces pebbles and eventually sand.

You can get sand from eroded dead coral reefs, I'm sure, but in general sand is not coral, let alone "poop" of any kind.
