That's it! I'm complaining to the city about my landlord's code violations!

So...I went to take a nap for an hour or two...I wake up, and there's water pouring out of the kitchen ceiling. Turns out that the morons are back next door and got the water going again. But it caused the already-full toilet to overflow, water all over the toilet floor and it's leaking through the huge hole in the kitchen ceiling all over the cabinets, the microwave and the floor. I will have to manually empty out the toilet (hehe, I love my life) just to flush it. So I'm left with an even bigger mess than there was before.

Oh, and I did call the city. They're supposed to call me back.

It's times like these when I wonder why I don't just kill myself. :(

Lol, the landlord was just over here and he said he doesn't have any money to fix things. I went off on him (not violently, just speaking my piece) and he runs off. Lol. If you don't have money to maintain property you own, then why do you own property in the first place? The place was broken down before we moved in because he let it end up that way. He never should've let people move in. This is all his fault. I'm pretty sure legal charges are going to be filed with him. He's going to be in big trouble with the city.

If he is incorporated then I think it kinda works like this: At the end of each month, he can pay himself a salary based on whatever is left over after expenses. If he says he doesn't have any money, he means the corporation, which in the worst case would go bankrupt which is no skin off his back. In that event, he can just start up a new corporation and continue the racket.

If there is no money in the corporation, then there are no damages to collect.

No, I'm not going to kill myself. Nope. This is it. I'm going to fight back. I'm going to be in control of my life for now on, for the first time in my life. I'm not letting people get away with abusing me and screwing me over anymore. I'm going to do what I can to force justice on the issue. If I have to, I'll even take it to the news.

I'm personally not pursuing charges. The city might, though, for letting it get so bad that the building is unfit for human habitation, for refusing to do anything about it and letting people move in knowing how bad it is. We'll see what happens. He might even be lying about not having money. I have no way to know if that's the truth.

You might consider filing a complaint with the BBB, sometimes they can steer you in the right direction.

Don't you have any social housing in the US?

Here in Poland, though it's a relic of the communist times, it functions quite well. It's not only for the poor, the disabled or moms with children. There is a number of apartments owned by the local authorities and it's for all those who can't afford to buy their own apartment. Many Poles can't afford it unless they take bank loans which means being in debt for decades. This housing is not free, you have to pay the rent but it's lower than when you rent an apartment from the private landlord. It's sometimes lower standard but not such a ****-hole as you described. It's clean, quite decent, the basic utilities are provided and the authorities are obliged to do all the necessary repairs.

Such housing is an advantage to the local authorities because they get some money from it. And most important, no slams means better hygiene and much less bugs.

I'm also not sure about the homeless shelters in the US and I wonder whether you wouldn't have better living conditions there. Perhaps, you could meet some people there who would help you to find some job and improve your situation.

Landlords can be truly monsters. He should have absolutely informed you of the pipe work, I don't know what state you live in but in California this sort of thing isn't legal so if you live in California you could take the landlord to court - the only issue is many cannot afford that.

But I have sat in on "meetjngs" (not sure if that is the word - these were public and announced) where there are organizations that volunteer to represent those who cannot afford the legal costs and who know how to file the paperwork et all and do so for free. Isn't there any such organization in your area? I bet there is if you look around. A simple internet search might help.

I suspect this landlord is a drunk or druggie and simply in a haze and too lazy to inform others. You should buy bottle water and then later take a civil action to recover the costs. But that won't help with the toilet. Does this landlord also live in the building? Ask if you could use his-her toilet until it is fixed. Or to provide a porta-potty until the work is done. Legally, you could demand a porta-potty via the health department, and that would cost the landlord a lot of money.

Look for other tenants under the same overlord and see if you all can gang up on him and complain. I think the city place thing then will push him harder.

It's nice to know that I'm completely worthless to society. I got served with the actual eviction papers a couple days ago and the court date is on the 1st. Legal Aid won't help me because I'm not paying rent and it's not in my name (what, do they want to talk to my mom's ashes?!). I didn't even get a chance to explain my situation. I don't see where I can file a grievance against them on the site. Before they wouldn't help me because I didn't have a court date at all, and now that I do, they find another excuse to blow me off. I spent about an hour on hold just for that. I hate that ***** on the intake line. She's all cheerful and ****, even when she's telling you to **** off. No one cares. I'm going to be homeless and my stuff thrown out on the street.

WHY do you keep announcing your drama???

You may curse my balls as you wish but sometimes it can be therapeutic to vent your situation and it can also help one gain some emotional support. Especially when someone is going through such bad circumstances as SF, it's generally not helpful to criticise them for "announcing their drama".
