Personal understanding:
There is no GOD per se; so none can one speak of IT, in that sense.
God is a concept or a term used by us and so any reference to the term should be understood it is with reference to THAT which includes everything seen or unseen and including our own selves.
Gautama's non-reference to the term does not mean he negated IT but simply his efforts wre that every human being should *realise* THAT.
Once realised then the concept becomes clear as one is part of IT and not seperated as seperated beings require paths and pointers through scriptures, gurus, etc. etc. to realise the SELF.
