And that may have been the case with Kirk Cameron in the beginning. But when you get involved in the debate in a significant way for an extended period of time, like Kirk has, then there comes a point when the excuse of honest ignorance is no longer available. And I am not claiming he is stupid either, perhaps not a genius, but I dont think the problem is a lack of intelligence. It is much worse than. What we have here is a deliberate willful ignorance and blind thoughtless adherence to dogma.
It is not just that no one has tried to educate him.
That's true. Kirk should have had more than enough time to have learned. However, he is primarily entering into the idea through debates. I'm sure when he researches the idea, he is going to creationists and IDers for his information.
And then when he enters into a debate, the information from the other side really isn't being taken into consideration too much. Especially when such information is being given in a more hostile fashion. I have see a couple of debates with either Ray Charles or Kirk Cameron in which the opponent simply was insulting and demeaning. Of course Kirk is going to become defensive then and shut off.
So much of it probably has to do with how he is getting into the arena, and the way many people respond. I have seen very few nice responses from his opponents on the subject. Most of them turn out to be similar to this thread, where he is insulted, the idea is insulted, etc. Really not a way to try to educate anyone.
Now, I accept evolution. However, it wasn't because of debates I saw or different forums like this. Really, for the most part, creationists were insulted and the like. I accepted evolution because I took the time to research it myself, and was lucky enough to find a teacher who knew how to teach well and was considerate.
I remember watching a documentary not too long ago, I think it was called a Flock of Dodo's, and the host basically said the same thing. Scientists just don't know how to effectively communicate the idea of evolution to the public, and those who accept evolution, don't do much better. Much of it comes down to simply dismissal of creationism without dealing with it, or blatant insults. I'm not saying all are like this, but it is one factor in which people continue to accept creationism as fact.
