Being "forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves." doesn't much impress me these days. It's merely a form of tribalism: Kind, compassionate towards "us", forceful towards "them". Tribalism has no place in the world community that is forming today.

In time of wars it make sense, the verse was mentioned for the prophet and his believers in the time of wars.

Except that there are no eternal truth.

If there were truth that's exist eternally, then all these truths from different religions should be exactly the same...but they are not the same.

Different ways don't always lead to the same end results.

Different times cause us how to rethink what we have done or known in the past.

Different languages and different cultures lead to diversity, which again, don't always lead to the same end results.

In the morning, I take off my pajamas and put on sweat pants and a t-shirt to take our dog to the dog park. Later on I change into jeans and a shirt to do volunteer stuff. And so forth but through it all I remain who I am - exactly the same. When it comes to religion, some confuse the essence from the clothing in which it's presented.
