Steve Vai is a beautiful choice. Good call. I'm personally in love with paul simon's guitar playing, but i don't think he's anywhere near the best; just a very diverse player. But i fear i may open the floodgates of "adequate" folk guitarists with this nomination...

SRV - SRV.
Steve Vai- David Lee Roth.
Ted Nugent- Damn Yankees, Ted Nugent
Santana - Santana.
Joe Walsh - Joe Walsh, the Eagles.
Jerry Garcia - Greatful dead.
David Gilmor - Pink floyd.

dimebag darell is the greatest guitarist EVER.
I agree. No one can come close to producing riffs nearly as good as Dimebags.
Kirk Hammet is the next best.

I remember when Yngwie first stared and they had those cool T-shirts that said-Yngwie Who? :bounce

And how could I forget David Mustane. Allthough not the greatest, he is definitly under-rated.

Dam straight! Shredding is easily the hardest component of the guitar, and therefore it should also be the most respected aspect too. Many people do not comprehend the fact that shredding is so hard, and end up choosing more mainstream guitarists as the best rather than the really talented ones. I have been playing the guitar for around 4 years, and only recently have i been able to shred, and I have an extremely long way off before I could even be considered one of the greatest.

Shredding is vastly overated. You want to challenge yourself as a guitarist, take up flatpicking, fingerpicking or classical style. Shredding is easy.

That is a mighty impressive list Aqualung, but your missing a few!

Jimmy Page - Led Zeppelin <<<<<< HE IS GOD! FEAR HIM.

Frank Zappa because he deserves to be mentioned twice

Steve Howe - Yes!: amazing control, combined with Steve Wakeman on Keyboards, they can induce euphoria (it's true).

Adam Jones - Tool (not everyones favourite, but noone plays with feedback or FX better.)

What about the bass player? I definitely think their bass player is one of the best ones out there. He's my idol (even if I can't remember his name. :D)

[qutoe=SnaleSpace]Adam Jones - Tool (not everyones favourite, but noone plays with feedback or FX better.)[/QUOTE]You know, I've only heard a few tool songs. I liked what I heard, but I just don't know them that well.

I will drive over to your house (since we both live in ontario) and shake your hand if you send me a recording of you playing erotomania/universal mind (DT, instrumedley speed) or No boundries (MAB). Those two songs alone, in each shredding parts, the guitarists play around 13-15 notes a second, which is roughly 6 to 8 milliseconds per note. You are telling me that it is easy to have picking hand + left hand coordination, while skipping strings like crazy, sweep 32nd notes, and play extremely clean??? I bet you don't even know what an arpeggio is, and you come up here with your trash talk. Please refrain from talking smack. And Shredding is UNDER RATED!!! How could you say it is over rated while people like Jimi Hendrix are the most popular? Begone cretin!

BURN HIM! SEND HIM BACK TO HELL!

Seriously though, let's see you play Children of Bodom's "Silent Night, Bodom Night" and then we'll see who gets the last laugh.
