The 666 story is just a bit of word play, not in the bible only my interpretation of some quotes.Works out does it not,God creating 3 arch angels and then 1 revolts leaving only 66.6 % of what he created, thus God is only a 66.6 % God.;)

And you were accusing other people of playing games with what the Bible says.

depends on how you look at it...
54%, if i am not mistaken, of those that go to church on a regular basis do take the bible literally....that is a significant number

perhaps the title of this thread should be:
the bible "it's own enemy", if taken literally

would be a better title...but isn't that a given?
source please

original sin starts whith Moses and those that have him in their hearts. Anyone who acts like a murderous, childish, control freak with abandonment issues has the spirit of Moses in their hearts. Everryone has been like this at one time in their lives or another. Moses himself represents the sinful nature in every man. The stories of Adam and Eve were created by the likes of Moses, so I wouild throw it a grain of salt, and not take too much of it to heart...jmo...

what you don't trust me ;)

A majority (54 percent) of those who attend church on a weekly basis said they believe the Bible to be the literal word of God. This compares with only 16 percent of those who say they seldom or never attend church services.

Poll: 3 In 10 Americans Take The Bible Literally
did you perchance take a moment and look at the raw source data?

Did you know that the result is based on responses from as far back as Aug 1976?

Dates the question was asked:
2011 May 5-8
2008 Dec 4-7
2008 May 8-11
2007 Dec 6-9
2007 May 10-13
2006 May 8-11
2005 May 2-5
2004 Nov 7-10
2002 Dec 9-10
2001 Feb 19-21
1998 Jun 22-23
1993 Jun 18-21
1991 Nov 21-23
1984 Nov
1984 Sep
1983 May
1981 Dec 11-14
1980 Jul 29-Aug 2
1978 Apr 18-May 1
1976 Aug 24-27
the question that was asked:
Which of the following statements comes closest to describing your views about the Bible -- the Bible is the actual word of God and is to be taken literally, word for word, the Bible is the inspired word of God but not everything in it should be taken literally, or the Bible is an ancient book of fables, legends, history, and moral precepts recorded by man?

no i didn't and i still don't see it...
this is what i see when i click on the gallup link

In U.S., 3 in 10 Say They Take the Bible Literally

Implications

The percentage of Americans taking a literal view of the Bible has declined over time, from an average of 38% from 1976-1984 to an average of 31% since. However, highly religious Americans -- particularly those of Protestant faiths -- still commonly believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible.

In general, the dominant view of Americans is that the Bible is the word of God, be it inspired or actual, as opposed to a collection of stories recorded by man. That is consistent with the findings that the United States is a predominantly Christian nation and that Americans overwhelmingly believe in God.

Survey Methods
Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted May 5-8, 2011, with a random sample of 1,018 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

The bible is most certainly its own enemy.

Aside from all of the nonsense that seems to have been going on around here :sarcastic

Let's start at the very beginning;
We read in the bible that this omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent supernatural being suddenly appeared, and then created everything from nothing, that's powerful won't you say.

Nope. The Abrahamic Faiths believe their god (Yahweh, Allah etc...) never had a beginning but always existed. For them their god is outside of space and time having no beginning and no end.

Then at some point this omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent supernatural being created three arch angels, with a host of angels for each of them to lead.

Possibly but I'm not sure that I ever read in their bible/quran it saying this.

Then at another point, one of these arch angels decided to rebel, and was thrown out of heaven, together with his quota of angels.

Where in there bible does it say that?

Now I can not fathom how this all knowing being, who created everything from nothing for whatever purpose, was unable to know that a third of what he created to worship himself, was going to rebel.

You shouldn't try to rationalize mythology.

Do you honestly think that asking a grand total of 1018 people over a 35 year period is even a reasonable representation of the 315 million people in the USA?

Seriously?

1018 in May 5-8, 2011.
Plus, social researches tend to use a low number of people.
It all comes down to whether the methodology employed is valid.

Like Orias said: It depends on who those people are.

Seriously?

just look at the trend...the 2011 poll reflects what i posted.

54% of believers believe the bible is to be taken literally...in 2011, not over a period of 35 yrs according to the gallup poll

now what i would like for you to do, is to give me your source that says different...

Quagmire,thanks for the pointer.
I don't get your drift :(
Do you dispute the facts that the bible teaches;
1)God appeared from nowhere and created everything from nothing,
2)the existence of the three arch angels, Michael the waring angel with his multitude of angels, Gabriel the massaging angel and Lucifer the rebel angel.
3)that Lucifer is Satan and is busy on earth working against God with his horde of demons (which were angels in heaven before the revolt)

I dont think god creates everything from nothing in genesis. There was definetely "somethings" around. The lucifer existence is one of the things the bible is inconsistent about.

Please support your claim that the Bible teaches:
1. god appeared from no where
2. god created everything from nothing
3. the existence of "Micheal", the waring arch angel
4. the existence of the messaging arch angel "Gabriel"
5. the existence of the rebel arch angel "Lucifer"
6. that Lucifer is the name of one specific being, not just a title
7. that Satan is the name of one specific being, not just a title
8. that Lucifer and Satan are the same entity
9. that Lucifer/Satan are actively working against god
10. that Lucifer/Satan were angels in heaven before the revolt.
and no, merely saying that people believe the above 10 claims is not showing where/how the Bible teaches them.

When I read thru the bible, and studied at bible school, the 10 points mentioned is what I understand the bible is saying, and therefore teaching is taken from these points.I will not argue that you see it different, and I respect that.
My point remains,I am unable to fathom the fact, that this all knowing being was able to create all that exists today, but was unable to know that what is created will be so controversial.
So I find it easier to believe what is discovered by science with proof, and feel vindicated that I do not believe in any supernatural deities,we evolved thru time to be at this point now,and will evolve until the planet is frozen or hit by a big space rock or a meteor.
While I'm here,I will "do unto others as I would like them to do unto me"

Look after nature and nature will look after you...
