The Black Metal and Death Metal thread!!

Immortal is one of the only black metal bands which produce albums i can sit down and listen to the whole thing. Sons of northern darkness and Damned in black are 2 such examples.

They prove you don't need poor production quality to be black metal, they are and always will be great.

Both great albums. I have never really thought you needed poor quality to be Black Metal, that's just the "kvlt kiddies" misinterpreting the bad quality. The original bands had bad quality because that was all they could afford. I'm not saying that bands with bad sound quality are bad, as I like a great deal of them, but there are a few who overdo it and try way too hard to sound bad.

EDIT: And I mean bad as in crappy haha

Yeh exactly, i could never get into Darkthrone or old Satyricon because it sounded crap and it all sounded the same. However, i dislike the fact that newer bands (Dark Funeral, new Satyricon and Dimmu Borgir) cop nonsense because they're not "true" and don't purposely produce poor sounding music.

I can appreciate older bands for what they've done for black metal and the lyrical mastery, but i can't actually listen to their music for more than a song or 2.

I don't think the higher produced bands should get crap either. But where you and I differ, is in that I do like Darkthrone and old Satyricon, but that's my own musical taste. I like some of the old raw stuff, as well as the newer stuff.

I love satyricon, seen them twice, met Frost in Brisbane in 2008 :)

Each to their own, i just find myself unable to enjoy such poor quality music when these days, there is so much out there with better recording and the message is the same. As a musician, i like higher quality so i can hear the technicality of riffs.

Have you heard the new Immortal album? All shall fall

Yes, each to their own. You are lucky to have met Frost. He plays in 1349 also, who I saw, but he can't get into the U.S. so they had a replacement drummer. He can play so fast haha.

I've heard a little bit of it, from what I heard it is pretty good.

And I myself am also a musician, and I actually play in a Black Metal band, but we are not going for that "raw" sound. Definitely a higher quality

Yeh, well new Satyricon is relatively slow and rocky (personally i love it) but on drums he still goes absolutely nuts. Im not a fan of 1349 to be honest.

Its great. Their consistency is amazing, it sunds new but so close to the Immortal sound. Worth a D/L.

I used to play in a sort of black/doom band. Stupid classification i know, but it was too slow for black, to fast for doom. I no longer have the time for it unfortunately.

I like Beyond the Apocalypse from 1349. But you and I differ a lot in taste of Black Metal, obviously, although we do have a lot of common likes.

That's pretty cool. I'm sure your probably weren't the first to try that. There are a few "doom black metal" bands. One, for example, is called Nortt, and he calls himself "Funeral Doom Black Metal"

We had to be slow because the voice just did not match fast tempo BM. We had clean vocals and scratchy backing, its usually the other way around.

Oh. I personally enjoy some clean vocals in Black Metal, for example with Belenos. I'm not a fan of Vortex in Dimmu Borgir, but I liked him in Borknagar. I like pre-Puritania... Dimmu Borgir.
