Personally, I don't think the 9/9/9 holds any weight, considering Jesus was most likely born in 2 BC around what would be May, in a civilisation that observed months via the moon.. .. AND it's 5769 at the moment (almost 5770 right guys?) in the Jewish calendar

It's because the On-reading of the Japanese numeral 9 is "ku (&#20061", which is cognate to "suffering" (苦, ku), same as the On-reading of the Japanese numeral 4 is "shi (&#22235", cognate to "death" (死, shi). Same sounds, just different kanji.

Which is why you don't give combs as presents in Japan (kushi).
