Does anyone have something that appears to be common sense, like how to do it is ingrained in everyone's mind in the world, but have no idea how to do it?

Well, it's been almost a year now that I've had this job on a pig farm, my first farm work ever, and I really enjoy it and coworkers seem to think I'm doing a good job - no complaints, and after the first work they told me I'm good to sign my name up for any days I want to work alone.

Then my boss asked me if I could rake rocks out of the grass as a side job at work today. Seemed simple enough. I picked up the rake and went to the grass and I then all of the sudden it hit me; I never was actually taught how to rake.

I know it sounds crazy but I seriously only raked once or twice in my entire life, usually my dad would do it when I was at school. I tried it and my boss came down eventually and he told me to stop because "there was more soil than grass" (an exaggeration mind you, and he said it mostly kindly just a little annoyed).

But yeah, it was really embarrassing and strange to find out that I didn't know how to rake. Like, who doesn't know? I have been doing farm work for almost a year just fine but I can't rake?? lol.

What about you? I mean anything at all. Trying not to feel alone here lol

Finding my own way
Almost anything involving agility--which included sports, shop class (of any variety), marching band, and in general walking down the hall without tripping. And this was _before_ the fibromyalgia hit. I swear I could walk across the living room and trip over the pattern of the carpet! :)

Farmhand huh? Nice. I worked a summer before on a pepper farm. I'm sure it smelled better than those pigs though, but you probably get used to it. Physical labor on a farm can be very rewarding if you're the right type.

Anyway, my entire life has just been one long example of lacking common sense. When I was younger, it was always an ordeal to locate simple objects around the house. It was like I had a blindspot and it always irritated my family. I just tend to contemplate the big picture of a room or situation and tend to be a little weaker when it comes to noticing details.

Raking is tricky, so it's not just you. I think it's kind of like sweeping. You don't want to push down too hard.

My step-dad used to tell me "you spend too much time buried in books, you have books smarts, but no common sense." I used to resent him for that, but the older I get, the more I realize he may have been right. But there's a reason for that. I lack basic social skills. I have no idea how to act around groups of people. I even get annoyed and antsy around groups of people. Now, this is probably due to me being Autistic, but nonetheless, I just don't get it. Psychology, anthropology, and biology all teach us that humans are social creatures, but I just don't get why. It's beyond me.

Don't sell yourself so short. You seem to be socializing just fine on these forums. Heck, you've even displayed more consistent civility than I have. At any rate, we can't all be good at everything. It takes all kinds to make the boat float.

being observant around people.
I'm OK at the big picture and relatively perceptive to moods and feelings but don't notice what people wear or what they look like in detail.

While in high school, I got a job doing painting, cleaning & misc odd jobs in a machine shop.
I had to mop a floor, & my employer had to show me how to do it. But I became a natural.

Pronouncing French terms.

I've been dancing for over 35 years, and started (and continued) in Ballet.

Ballet terminology is all in French.

Taking my Ballet classes at times is hilarious for the students who wind up correcting me.

Cooking anything that looks edible. Don't get me wrong, I can cook and make things that taste good ... but it always ends up looking awful. Best example is I made a cream and mushroom pasta sauce from scratch a while back. Tasted good, looked like grey wallpaper paste.

I can't work with machinery to save my life; especially anything that deals with car engines.

Need and oil change? A jump start? A battery de-rusting?

Sorry, I'm not your person. :run:
